After the First World War, many people were looking forward to good times. The 1920’s presented people with this time of fast-paced fun and adventure. Entertainment was the foremost part of everyday life during the 1920’s. Radio introduced a whole new practice of entertainment to people’s everyday lives. Likewise, through the utilization of the radio, people were able to experience a new medium to entertain themselves. Furthermore, the radio changed the face of society’s culture through its widespread use. In addition, radios provided people with a new, effective and efficient means of communication. Radio was a fundamental aspect in people’s lives during the 1920’s as it provided many people with news and entertainment in their day-to-day lives.
The radio accommodated people’s desire to have fun by introducing them to a new entertainment experience. People could now listen to news, music, entertainment shows, and weather forecasts. Families would gather around the radio for night-time entertainment. (Radio in the 1920s) People would schedule their day-to-day activities around popular radio shows. Young individuals started to dance to the most current jazz music and ministers would broadcast their Sunday sermons to many listeners. (Radio Craze, Class Zone) The radio offered free entertainment in the home which was a blessing for the ill, the restricted, parents of small children, and those merely fatigued after a day's labor. Additionally, people were now able to share this source of entertainment with everyone. In the 1930's radio was beginning to hit the height of its popularity. Because of the Depression people found that they were without excess in terms of money therefore cheaper forms of entertainment became very popular. Radio was wonderful because it could bring many different types of entertainment. People could follow sports through the radio, which many did. It was not uncommon for people to gather around the radio and listen to the Yankees game being broadcast. People could keep up to date with current affairs thanks to the news broadcasts that aired. This was very important at this time due to the impending problems that were taking place in Europe. "Fireside Chats" were broadcast by President Roosevelt as a way to keep the people of America informed on many things that were happening in the country. President Roosevelt discussed a number of topics including The New Deal, the economic problems, the impending war, unemployment, inflation, the coal crisis, and many other important issues. The Fireside Chats lasted for about ten years and were enormously popular. Americans could turn to the radio for drama in the form of daily soap operas; they found laughs in comedy and variety shows; and even could find tales of heroics in broadcasts such as The Lone Ranger or The Green Hornet.

Through out the 1920’s many inventions were created that altered human civilization. Transportation was successfully mastered. Radio communication was becoming more common and medicine was saving more and more lives every day.
Many of the inventions during the 1920s modernized America. Inventions of the 1920s include the American Hammond Organ, adhesive bandages, car radios, loudspeakers, electric shavers, and traffic signals. Household items like electric irons, toasters, refrigerators, air conditioners, radio, television, and vacuum cleaners made daily life very different from previous generations. The radio was in almost every home and provided listeners with sports, concerts, and news. Radio quickly became a national obsession. For those that could not afford a radio, the radio in public places became a gathering place and allowed people to keep up with issues and share ideas and opinions. The first movie with sound was introduced and started the movie industry. As automobiles became more affordable, movie theatres became more popular. After four hard years of fighting, Canadians celebrated the end of the Great War. Many returned to the country early in 1919, only to be brought down by the lack of employment and other disappointments. However, slowly, good times returned back to Canada, as the country ushered into a new era known as the “Roaring Twenties”. Many Canadians participated in the good life as the wealthy, as well as average families had more money to spend. Economic prosperity and technological advances brought Canadians pleasure to their lives. Canadians tuned in to their radios, used the automobile, cheered for their home sports teams, followed new fashion trends, listened to the same music and did the same dances. The Roaring Twenties was a time of confidence for all Americans, and this confidence affected them both culturally and socially. Culture in America at the time could have been described by words, such as baseball, the radio, patriotism, and even music. At the time, the radio swept the nation, bring people the sweet sounds of music everywhere at any time. Radio shows sprang up and introduced people to new ideas, and new ways of thinking. Some radio stations brought radical ideas and malicious attacks on many people, manily politicians. In fact, Robert P. Shuler was a pastor in Los Angeles whom was kicked off the radio for slandering the government and public officials. The radio also broadcasted America’s favorite pass time, baseball. Baseball was apart of every household in the 1920s, and it brought joy to millions of people across the nation. “He honestly believed that he loved baseball… the game was a custom of his clan, and it gave an outlet for the homicidal and side-taking instincts which babbit called ‘patriotism’ and ‘love of the sport’ (H). The sport baseball gave hope to many Americans. With the good times of the 1920's, came the most astouding number of consumer inventions Canada had ever seen. From 1923 to 1929, many Canadians had full-time jobs and regular paychecks. And with the growing amount of media advertising, Canadians were swepted away with the amount of flyers and catalouges filled with new products to buy and enjoy. Though some were invented by Canadians, most came from America. Entertainment in the 1920s began changing after World War I. Because people had more money and were more prosperous, they were able to go to theatres, clubs, and sporting events. Although the greatest form of entertainment had been motorcars, it was a form of freedom that people had never experienced. Where would the world be without the inventions and ideas of the 1920's? The answer is, no one really knows; however, the inventions and ideas that were brought about in the 1920's are things that are used more than ever today. With the technological advancements made in the 1920's, the invention of the radio, television, automobile, and other minor advancements made the 1920's one of the most important decades of the 1900's.
