“Are my ears deceiving me?” When I overheard part of a racist comment from a colleague, I was utterly disgusted, particularly because this person is part of my management team. Along with the disgust came disappointment; I expected someone of a managerial position to be held to a higher standard.
I am currently employed at Care One of Evesham which is a sub-acute rehab facility. In order for optimal patient care to be achieved nurses need to be inspired by their work and feel supported by the health care staff. Both patients and nurses deserve to be given the attention and support they need to thrive. The patient to nurse ratio in California is already being addressed and this is a movement that needs to extend worldwide. It is imperative that health care professionals as a whole are being heard and supported. Patients depend on their health care providers and nurses are the backbone of patient care thus acknowledging their needs should always be top priority.
Dating back to the beginning of times people have always been looked at different depending on the color of their skin or what your religion, race, or beliefs may be. It is in our human nature to not like people for certain things that they are. Many will argue that in this day in age we are no longer at a race war but how can you be so sure when you actually open your eyes and see reality. The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. More people have become aware of racism and the way we treat people but it’s still a problem. Nursing units today, need to be ran like a well-oiled machine. In order to do this, everyone that makes up the nursing unit needs to understand their co-workers and what drives them professionally. There are four generations that make-up todays nursing units. I believe, if everyone had a clear understanding of what generations encompass their nursing unit there will be less conflict in the nursing unit and a better understanding of what drives each individual professionally. In this event, the matter that is unusual can be the fact that I have experienced and witnessed the process for interprofessional collaboration between the community nurse and other professionals that I have never knew about before. This event made me realize that there are many aspects of community nursing that I have knew about before where in this situation it is the importance and accountability of interprofessional collaboration. From my nursing theory course I have learned that interprofessional collaboration is when the nurse forms relationships with other professionals that enable them to achieve a common goal to deliver care and strengthen the health system and clients involved in it. A- Value seeing health care situations “through patients’ eyes”. The patient that I have chosen for this discussion is an elderly woman. Her diagnosis was a fracture of the left femur, which happened as a resident in a long-term care facility. Comorbidities include Alzheimer's disease and type II diabetes. She was described by other staff as being mean, uncooperative, difficult, and lazy; little did they know that I was a nurse at the long-term care facility and have cared for this woman many times prior to this hospitalization.

Nurses are an equally important part of each client’s life. Nurses provide stable care to each client, answers their questions, gives medications and treatments, and assists with medical procedures. They also have the responsibility to explain to clients and family members what they should and should not do as they go through treatment and recovery. Nurses must quickly respond to patients needs. Every individual nurse has his or her own unique way of caring. There are so many ways to show caring that the possibilities are never ending.
