Racism is a set of attitudes, beliefs, and practices that is used to justify the superior treatment of one racial or ethnic group, and the inferior treatment of another racial or ethnic group. (Kendall p.183). Racism in American society still exists in many forms. The goal of this research is to demonstrate how racism still occurs, as well as the different circumstances under which they can happen. Recently we have seen cases of law enforcements abusing their power as an officer among people and their society. In David Dante Troutt (2014), he appears to make a point with people turning their cheeks to police abuse. If they 're purpose is to serve and protect, then why is nothing being done when they are no longer protecting or serving their communities? Being familiar with the laws and your own rights could play a crucial role in developing a peaceful society. Many people claim that racism no longer exists; however, the minorities’ struggle with injustice is ubiquitous. Since there is a mass incarceration of African Americans, it is believed that African Americans are the cause of the severe increase of crimes. This belief has been sent out implicitly by the ruling class through the media. The media send out coded messages that are framed in abstract neutral language that play on white resentment that targets minorities. Disproportionate arrest is the result of racial disparities in the criminal justice system rather than disproportion in offenders. The disparities in the sentencing procedure are ascribed to racial discrimination. Because police officers are also biased, people of color are more likely to be investigated than whites. Police officers practice racial profiling to arrest African Americans under situations when they would not arrest white suspects, and they are more likely to stop African Americans and see them as suspicious (Alexander 150-176). He was bleeding. Everybody had blood on their forearms. We ran back up the hill laughing… He should have died… He lost so much blood he turned white. He got what he deserved…” (Ridgeway 167). The skinheads who were beating this man up had no reason to do so except for the fact that he was Mexican. Racism in this day and age is still as big of a problem as it was in the past, and as long as hate groups are still around to promote violence, society is never going to grow to love one another.
For the past 400 year African Americans have suffered severe forms of oppression, hatred and racism. Even though America has made great strides to eliminate the practice of hatful ideologies and discrimination the residue of inhuman treatment still resides in our society. Racism (n): the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other race (Wordnet search, 1), a controversial topic in today’s society, a subject that many people try to sweep under the rug, but yet a detrimental problem that has been present in America since the colonial era. Will this dilemma come to a halt? Can all Americans see each other as equals despite their skin color and nationality; and what role has it played in past generations versus today’s generations and how will it affect our future? Has this on going way of thinking gotten better or worse? These are questions raised when many think about the subject; especially members of American ethnic groups and backgrounds, because most have dealt with racial discrimination in their life time.
Dating back to the beginning of times people have always been looked at different depending on the color of their skin or what your religion, race, or beliefs may be. It is in our human nature to not like people for certain things that they are. Racism can be defined as "any set of beliefs, which classifies humanity into distinct collectives, defined in terms of natural and/or cultural attributes, and ranks these attributes in a hierarchy of superiority and inferiority" (Blum 5). It can be directly linked to the past and still, centuries later, serves as a painful reminder that race continues to be one of the "sharpest and deepest divisions in American life" (Loewen 138). What are the causes of racism? How did it develop historically? In order to answer those complex questions, I plan to examine the conditions of America's history, from colonialism to present day society.

Like many sociological ideas, racism has a familiar use and countless everyday meanings. The sociological viewpoint gives race as basically a social category and examines race relations with reference to societal constructions and development. According to Philomena Essed in her book Understanding Everyday Racism, “The specific forms racism takes are determined by the economic, political, social, and organizational conditions of society.” Many people are unaware of racism; people may ask how racism is incorporated in our lives? Why do blacks even believe that individuals are racist towards them? These are constant questions that maybe aren’t asked but definitely questioned. The answer is control. Control is the factor to racism. The more you can bring a group down and make them feel belittled, the easier it is to control them.

Growing up in a multicultural home, society never left me ignorant to the fact that racism is still alive. Being that I am biracial, I was able to experience both sides of the two cultures: the good, the bad and the ugly. Years have passed and people believe that abolishing slavery, ending segregation, and the election of our first black president, Barack Obama has erupted a new era and put an end to racism. Indeed, his election was a momentous occasion and a huge milestone on the journey to reconciliation. Riots, arguments, fights, and controversy over racism have broken parts of this society. Racism is thought to be over by some, but others believe there will be no end to it. Nevertheless, the future cannot be determined by how and when racism will end. Today’s stories and news give evidence that bigotry and hatred still exist. It is hard to tell when it started, but it continues to creep through the years leaving behind its evidence on those affected by it. Racism has been a part of this society and will continue to be in the new generations to come. The history of racism, the treatment of people, and new biases made by a new generation contribute to the problem of racism today.
Racism, if we actually think about it, has always been around in The United States Of America. It is in all of the history we are taught but just thrown in there like it was nothing. For a while people weren’t realizing how alive it was even after the Civil Rights Movement and that includes all races. Racism by definition is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.
