Race, Racism and My Community

Racial issues are an important part of any city in America today. America is a racially diverse country but still seems to have many problems as far as racial equality, race relations, and encouraging diversity. My community is in, what I think, is a fairly unique situation in terms of race. According to the census and other sources I found on the internet, the population of Cedar Hill, Texas is approximately 32,093. The city is growing and very much like the other upscale suburbs in Dallas. Cedar Hill offers satisfying opportunities for both indoor and outdoor activities and is a very family-oriented city. The city has an amusement park, a skating rink, a 14-screen Cinemark Movie Theater, and a studio for arts and craftsmen. The Tangle Ridge Golf Course is one of the state’s top-rated golf courses. The Texas Motor Speedway is nearby as well. Horse racing is also something that I have a lot in common with. I love horses and was raised with them. My dad owned Quarter Horses, and my family would travel to different states to attend the horse races. The population statistics show that there are 52.3% females and 47.7% males. African Americans make up 33.9%, of which I’m included, 56.7% are White, 0.5% are American Indian and Alaskan, and 2% are Asian. 11.9% are Hispanic, and other mixed races are 72%. This difference hopefully helps you understand why my town is different from many others. There is a mixture of races, and we all get along. The family next door to me is Hispanic. The mother is single and has three young adult children. I feel sorry for her because she has a lot of problems with them, and she talks with me about the problems. They are taking over her home with all of their belongings. References: Cedar Hill City of (2010). Citywide Neighborhood Services. Retrieved from www.cedarhilltx.com.
