Race and Gender

The race will always be a factor as long as people let it separate themselves from one another. Characteristics like race are necessary to make up one’s identity. Race and gender are the main features that define someone.
In the essay After Ferguson Canedy talks about how her son is afraid to accept that he is African American. He was born light skin with blue eyes, which made him look Caucasian and since a lot of events where been happening with African Americans he was afraid that those events would make its way to him.
“After his second-grade class created self-portraits last year, I noticed that he was the only one not hanging on the classroom wall. His teacher explained that his portrait was ‘a work in progress.’ The brown crayon he had used to color in his face was several shades too dark, she thought, and so she wanted him to ‘lighten it up’ to more accurately reflect his complexion. In the essay, Canedy is a caramel brown skin tone woman after her child was born everyone assumed that she was Jordan’s nanny. She was a black mother that was trying to keep her son from racism just like Chung from what goes through your mind: on night parties and casual racism Chung also tried keeping her kids from racism. “His silence is the one that hurts a bit if I’m honest. But this is his family, these are his friends, and anyway it’s only been a split-second since the words left the woman’s mouth and no doubt he’s running through the same agonizing, silent calculus I am,...

...mas Merton an American Catholic mystic, poet and social activist, once said, “Identity is something more than your features and something that you’re born with.” The race is something we are born into. In Chung and Canedy essay both talk race and even though they try to hard to get away from a race joke or race its self they know that can’t escape this reality, even if they marry a white guy like Chung and have half white babies or in Canedy case being in a higher middle class with her son going to an elite school. They still face racist comments. While gender always going to be a factor where you have a strong side and a weak side a Man and a Woman will never be seen equalled, on the other when Race and gender both play role in one’s identity it can harm the person 's self-esteem by putting them less than what they are and not being able to achieve what they seek.

- God is often seen as a white male figure that is the creator of our universe, and is the source of all that is good and powerful. Corporeality Gender and Race Positioning: The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy

- In The God of Small Things, Roy ingeniously exposes and denounces the politics of the subaltern through questions of corporeality gender and race positioning. She does so, however, in a way that escapes facile dichotomous divisions and obvious essentialist oppositions. At the core of her critique is a social and cultural system that not only stifles individual freedom and social mobility but also, and above all, represses the expressions of the body and the discourses of desire. Arundhati Roy successfully builds a narrative that focuses on bodily encounters that defy authoritative discourses and function as frontiers of cultural and social contacts....   [tags: gender, race, politics]
