One rural school was selected for this small-scale study, nevertheless, there is potential to extend the research at a later date if required. Permission was obtained to undertake a pilot study within a local school, this enabled the research to be small-scale and locally relevant. Prior to the commencement of the research, discussions were held with school management to ensure that ethical measures and considerations were understood and addressed (McGrath and Coles, 2013). Copies of the purpose, methods and intended use of the research information were provided to the school, in addition, the completed study would be available to the school, as advocated by Rose (2011).
When conducting a research project, it is crucial to employ appropriate enquiry methods, suitable approaches inform the study, whilst ensuring that research remains purposeful, accurate and valid (Thomas, 2010). The points raised within the literature review would prove difficult to quantify given as they pertained to the perceptions of others (Artino et al., 2014). Therefore, teacher based questionnaires, informal interviews, timed observations and samples of children’s work were employed to obtain research pertaining to these points. To mitigate this issue, informal interviews were held with two KS2 teachers, selected due to their seniority within the teaching staff, through purposeful sampling (McGrath and Coles, 2013). Furthermore, interviews were semi-structured as a means to increase reliability, as advocated by McLeod (2014).
Before presenting the results of this research, it is worthy of note that whilst the interviews and questionnaires provided an overview of teacher opinion, awareness amongst the school staff regarding the themes of my research, may have influenced their given responses (Mathers, Fox, and Hunn, 2009). Whilst acknowledging that there are limitations related to small-scale research projects, the information gleaned from this study, may be locally relatable and has relevance in relation to my on-going practice.
