The purpose of this study is to explore key questions, raised through the course of the literature review. These questions related to teacher’s subject knowledge and children’s engagement in relation to graphic texts, thus, forming the basis for my research. This study was conducted as a small-scale, action research project in order to develop and extend my practice, action research is the process of ‘posing questions, gathering data and on-going reflection’ (Ferrance, 2005, p 7).

One rural school was selected for this small-scale study, nevertheless, there is potential to extend the research at a later date if required. Permission was obtained to undertake a pilot study within a local school, this enabled the research to be small-scale and locally relevant. Copies of the purpose, methods and intended use of the research information were provided to the school, in addition, the completed study would be available to the school, as advocated by Rose (2011).

When conducting a research project, it is crucial to employ appropriate enquiry methods, suitable approaches inform the study, whilst ensuring that research remains purposeful, accurate and valid (Thomas, 2010). The points raised within the literature review would prove difficult to quantify given as they pertained to the perceptions of others (Artino et al., 2014). These research methods are qualitative in nature,...

... during questionnaires, may influence the results of the data. To mitigate this issue, informal interviews were held with two KS2 teachers, selected due to their seniority within the teaching staff, through purposeful sampling (McGrath and Coles, 2013). Furthermore, interviews were semi-structured as a means to increase reliability, as advocated by McLeod (2014).

Before presenting the results of this research, it is worthy of note that whilst the interviews and questionnaires provided an overview of teacher opinion, awareness amongst the school staff regarding the themes of my research, may have influenced their given responses (Mathers, Fox, and Hunn, 2009). Whilst acknowledging that there are limitations related to small-scale research projects, the information gleaned from this study, may be locally relatable and has relevance in relation to my on-going practice.

- Research is defined as an organized and planned approach for learning. It is a scientific technique to find solutions to the problems which are related and has significant effect on the society. As pointed out by Gerald Milburn, “Scientific research is a chaotic business, stumbling along amidst red herrings, errors and truly, creative insights. Great scientific breakthroughs are rarely the work of a single researchers plodding slowly by inexorably towards some final goal. The crucial idea behind the breakthrough may surface a number of times, in different places, only to sink again beneath the babble of an endless scientific discourse”....   [tags: Scientific method, Research]

Essay about Theme of Alienation in Literature

- A Alienation is a common theme in literature as it can elicit many deep emotions. It can be attached to characters who have acted very drastically or who need to do so. Either way, alienated characters create a sense of intrigue with the personal reliance that they are faced with. Receiving help from others is not as applicable to these people. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, “The Minister’s Black Veil,” Anne Sexton’s, “The Farmer’s Wife,” and T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” each magnificently create their own sense of character alienation....   [tags: Literary Review]
