Tyson Ramone English 111-1 Summer 2015 Final Draft Class and Race This purpose of this paper is to explore if class and race plays a part in how children are raised. This paper will also explore how class and race plays a role when parents involve themselves in their child’s school, how the parents raise their children, ties to family, teaching, authority, and physical punishment. The hypothesis for this paper is that class and race does play a role in how children are raised and how parents of different backgrounds and class involve themselves in the child’s lives, school, etc. Also, along with class and race, culture plays a role in how parents involve themselves in their child’s life. Some of the advantages of being born into the upper and middle class is access to better resources, such as schools, healthcare, organized activities, etc. For example, in the book Unequal Childhood, in chapter six, the child, Alexander Williams, is an African American child with his mother and father who are considered middle class. In this study, the mother would organize after school activities. According to his mother, Ms. Williams, “it is her obligation to help get her son out of the house to cultivate his talents.” (Lareau, Ch. 6, pg. 112.) As stated above, the access to resources to help their child develop their talents is an advantage to being born into a certain social class. Another benefit is the use of language. For example, in the Lareau’s book, Alex is visiting the doctor, when the doctor is asking about his height; Alex interrupts the doctor and corrects him about his age. This is important because this gives Alex is “affirming their right to air their own thoughts and ideas to adults” (Lareau, Ch 6, pg 125.) Some of the advantages of being in the lower/poor class. For example, in Laraeu’s book, Harold McAllister is an African American, with his mother, who considered working/poor class. In this study, Harold is surrounded by family members every day. The disadvantage of being born into a social class. For example, the access to basic needs, such as food or clean clothes. Things middle class people take advantage of. In one of the chapters of the book, a working/poor single mother did not let her daughter go to school because she did not have clean clothes. Another responsibility, in chapter seven in the book, Harold McAllister, his mother is in charge of taking care of her children along with her sisters children because her sister is a drug addict. The theme in working and poor class parents is that they are not as attentive to their kids as middle class parents are. However, this does not mean that they do not love their kids. It is just a different approach to development. This ties back into the major concept Lareau: concerted cultivation or natural growth. In this reflexive paper I intend to explore for myself some ideas about the Umwelten of inner city, lower SES African American families (I taught in inner city Washington, D.C.) and white American suburban middle class families. Different Umwelten can lead to vastly different ways of thinking about what it means to be successful in life and, thus, how parents raise and what they desire for their children.

This is clear evidence that the Lareau dwells much on social class as the principal and prevalent theme in the American society towards parenting and child bearing (4). Indeed, at some point, Lareau reports that while race produces childhood inequality, most outcomes for children, from interactions to education, largely depends with social stratification (4). Therefore, she discusses that social class is more influential in relation to race.
Race as a factor in inequity. Ladson-Billings and Tate (1995) posit that race continues to be a significant factor in determining inequity in the United States. Race matters in society. If we look at high school drop out, suspension, and incarceration rates of men of color in America we see a disproportionate amount of men of color marginalized and profiled by society. This is further compounded by the perception that male faculty of color cannot be educators or at least are not often conceptually visualized in that capacity (Bryan and Browder, 2013).
Certainly, being born into a privileged family have their advantages. Unfortunately, for those who are born into poverty may struggle for their success, but it is not impossible. The podcast “Three Miles” is a great example of that. Comparatively, on the surface Melanie and Raquel are two individuals coming from the same unfortunate circumstances. Although, both girls were introduced to the same pen pal program their outcomes would travel different courses. Initially, the purpose of this program is to give students from poor neighborhoods a glimpse inside their wealthier counterpart’s lives, from another school. Raquel and Melanie’s backgrounds were similar, because they were afforded the same opportunities, but they turned out differently. Raquel was driven while Melanie is unambitious.
Racism and ethnicity continue to affect the sector of education in most parts of the world. More often, it influences adults and children’s experiences in education at all levels and in various ways. These include professional employment, academic performance, parental involvement, social interactions, assessment issues, and curriculum development. Certainly, the terms racism and ethnicity identify as problematic and arise socially. Therefore, many people fail to recognize that racism is a perception about the color of the skin and traditions of a particular group of people. Our daily lives are affected by race whether we are aware of it or not. How we live different aspects of our lives depend on the colour of our skin. From the types of jobs we have, the income we earn, where we live etc. In societies fundamentally structured by race, it is important that we do not abandon the notion of race, but instead pioneer a revolution in the way that races are understood. In this paper, I will examine how the dominant groups in society define race in terms of biology, which leads to the notion of white privilege, which is their advantaged position in society, at the expense of other racial groups.
The parents as the role models for their children that means many children will do what their parents mostly do, hence, is really important that the parents teaching their child. Throughout, Bettie research describing how young women experience class differences within their peers and culture depending on living conditions and identity. I think Bettie explained fully how cultural capital can be a privilege but it can also be a reason why their is a huge gap between classes. Not only this but Julie illustrates how women are treated by earning lower wages then men. The connection of race and race relations in the United States was an ongoing issue, and while much progress was made, there are still people who revert back to old and ignorant takes on different races as the white man. This clearly relates to my own history based on the fact that various races are still being discriminated and treated unfairly and looked at as unequal. I can only hope that one day the whole population of the world can do the right thing and look at everyone as equals.
The concept of race is an ancient construction through which a single society models all of mankind around the ideal man. This idealism evolved from prejudice and ignorance of another culture and the inability to view another human as equal. The establishment of race and racism can be seen from as early as the Middle Ages through the present. Class is something that is often defined by ones income, job, and family background, the area in which they live or indeed the schools or universities they have chosen to attended. This criteria is used to label people as a certain class and is something that can be seen in education through the likes of theories such as cultural capital. In this essay I am going to compare and contrast differences between middle and working class experiences of education focusing on two main theories; Cultural capital and social reproduction. I am going to concentrate upon the primary sector in oppose to secondary or higher education due to the fact I believe that primary school is where most children develop their personalities which they carry with them in further life and it is their first academic experience; therefore it is where social class first becomes clearly noticeable. In relation to these theories I am going to research into the argument that parents have a strong influence on their child’s education from this young age.
