In order to be admitted into the ENG 1430 class, I had already acquired the ways to write process essay, cause and effect essay, and compare and contrast essay. During this semester, I found that the most significant issue that arose was I learned how to write three different kinds of essays: summary and response, rhetorical analysis and argumentative essays. Learning how to write three kinds of new essays is exciting progress for my academic writing skills. My interest in writing has improved as well. The new writing strategies, the key factors of each essay, and the strengths and weaknesses I have are the three most important things I got from this class.

The key is to understand what ethos, pathos, and logos are. Then I learned to find the sentences in the article and sort them into three parts. Analyzing the rhetorical techniques can improve my writing skills and my essays can be more credible when I need to persuade readers. Compared with the rhetorical analysis essay, the argumentative essay is harder and more complex. I should state my opinion and find enough reasons to support it. The most important thing in writing an argumentative essay is rebut the opposite opinions strongly. In this case, the rhetorical techniques I learned before helped me a lot to make my essay reasonable. The summary-response essay is different from those two kinds of essays. I could not mention any of my opinions, but had to summarize all the important information in the article. Then, I had to mention something impressive the article and express my feeling and views in the response. Using good transitions were required when I wrote the last sentence in the summary or the first sentence in the response.
I am calm, emotionally stable and am less easily upset than people with high levels of neuroticism. It really helps when writing an essay which has one thousand and five hundred words. It means I have more patience than others when working on the second, third, and final draft, which can improve my essay a lot. Additionally,
This course and writing these essays has drastically improved my writing capabilities. Before this course I could not write an enthymeme or effectively write an argumentative paper. Establishing a clear and strong enthymeme to a question at issues helps me organize my ideas within the body paragraphs and keeps me from becoming repetitive. I understand now that addressing a counter argument strengthens my paper and helps tell the reader that you know your topic and have strong reasons. I look forward to using the writing skills I learned in this class towards future writing opportunities either with my studies or outside of school. I will continue to use enthymemes to effectively state my claim and reason and to strengthen my argument.
In this English course for the past semester, I have learned many new forms of essays and many new techniques. There was much more conversation with my classmates this year and I believe that lead me to a better class experience and grade. The essays have also taught me many new skills that can help me in the future. The rhetorical analysis, Causal Argument, and Proposal essay have taught me many new writing techniques and the advantages of peer review.
Going into this course, I felt that the reading and writing skills I learned in high school were very beneficial in preparing me for an English college course. In high school, I was enrolled in GATE and AP English courses. In these classes, I was assigned several readings and was taught to actively read by doing annotations. I was to summarize the writer 's main points, to write down my own opinions, or to connect it to any personal experiences. These annotations helped me understand the writer 's message better because I was able to break down the things the writer said and only focused on the important points. Then, I was also able to form my own opinion on that topic by deciding whether I agreed or disagreed with the author’s opinion. Moreover, I used evidence from the text to support my argument.
In summary reflexivity relates to judgements made from one's own personal experiences. By being reflexive and recognising that I am part of the research data and through exploring my own practice with the intention of understanding my practice, I show how I am part of the research. With this new knowledge I continue knowing differently that my story is my data and as such the application of reflection/reflexivity, in such a way as Bolton, Freire and Cuncliffe suggests, will make it all the richer and more valuable.
English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
English 111 was different from what I expected a college English course to be. I was expecting to have to read books and analyze the meaning of the themes. I found it challenging to have to analyze different websites and design our own. This was different from what I experienced in high school English classes. This course required that I expand beyond my comfort zone when writing essays. This required that I put more time and dedication into projects. It allowed me to learn valuable skills to use in other courses in college and I learned what abilities I need to concentrate on. I carry with me the abilities to use rhetoric devices to analyze websites, research techniques to polish the ethos of my papers, and the knowledge that I need to refine using other sources of media (i.e. websites, PowerPoints, etc.) to present an argument from English 111.
I have never thought that essay writing could be so hard and stressful. However, when I started my first ESL course, which was ESL 263, I was proven wrong. First of all, I didn’t know anything about essay writing. That class was my first experience in English writing. I wanted to drop the class so many times. Essay writing was just so stressful. I remember our instructor telling us that ESL 263 is an easy class compared to ESL 273. Of course that freaked me out. I started questioning myself if I really want to continue studying. Obviously, I kept studying. Nonetheless, I wanted to drop ESL 273 also. I’m glad I stayed in this class because I learned a lot and I can see improvements in my writing. I signed up for English 131 because I enjoy writing and figured it would be a fun and informative course in which I could learn writing strategies to help me in my college career and beyond. I’ve always thought of myself as a pretty good writer, as I took AP English classes in high school and it has always been a subject I’ve naturally gravitated towards. This course exceeded my expectations as to what I could learn in ten weeks. I feel that my writings skills have developed in all aspects, and I can take the skills I have learned and applied them to other courses and my future career. It’s an extremely good feeling after finishing an assignment, reading it over, and feeling very proud of how I was able to develop my thoughts and resources into something that has the potential to make a lasting impact on its readers.
When reflection upon my lesson that I taught, I feel that I taught in a multimodal way to deepen the students understanding of the material being taught. I had never designed a meson plan for any students before especially not 5-year-old students. Therefore, I wanted to be sure that I could accurately convey the concept to the children. So, when it came to constructing my lesson, I wanted to make sure that I included auditory, visual, and tactile strategies in my lesson so I reach all the students different learning modalities.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
Upon signing up to go to Havana, Cuba with the Education Studies Department of Spelman College, I knew I was guaranteed to gain life long experiences and tools. However, I did not realize the depth and quality of those tools. Although, I have have traveled abroad before -- I have never used scotopic lens to directly focus on the needs of others. Instead, I most often use photopic lens, as in the United States, opportunity is portrayed to be so apparently bright that you have to find the darkness. Entering my final year of high school, I faced many uncertainties and experienced many emotions as everything has quickly become a last. Like every year, fall semester has been my busiest with the combination of marching band, academics, clubs, and other extracurriculars. Throughout this semester, the self-reflections helped me open my eyes to who I am as a person and identify the challenges and obstacles I encounter as a student. Yes, I have my strengths but I also have my weaknesses, which can be burdening and impact the effort I put into school. Additionally, these reflections have provided an understanding as to what I might excel at in the future based on such strengths and weaknesses and the improvements I can make.
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
