“The quality of the home has had a large impact on the child’s development and psychosocial functioning” (Carlson & Corcoran, 2001). Carlson and Corcoran (2001) also stated: when a child has been raised in a two-parent home, the parents have shared the responsibility in caring for the child, guiding the child, and providing discipline. When the child’s parents have not lived together, one parent tended to take on the role of being the sole provider of parental duties and providing financial provision. The nonresident parent tended not to be involved in the daily activities of the child’s life, and had less interaction with the child.

Commitment to a father identity has increased the likelihood of greater paternal involvement. A father identity has been comprised of the father’s perceptions and expectations of himself, and how he should perform certain fathering roles. If the father has identified with the particular roles in which he has believed fathers should function, attached importance to his role, identified with his role, perceived himself as being able to fulfill the fathering role, and found satisfaction with the fathering role, then he has been more likely to be an active participant in his child’s life.
