Purpose of Education
When people talk about education, they often imagine students going to school and having information stuffed in their heads rather than drawing out their own potential, according to Sydney J. Harris. Just like Sydney said, education today is more about feeding information into a person rather than drawing something out, so the purpose of education has changed from teaching people to stuffing them with miscellaneous facts and giving them little time to digest it. Therefore, the education process today is missing its purpose as well as misleading its students. In order to complete the purpose and avoid misleading its students, education must promote curiosity in the classroom, independent thinking, and sense of responsibility as purpose.
The first purpose of education and also one of the most important characteristic of human being is curiosity. Because curiosity had intrigued people throughout history and drive them into many astonishing discoveries and inventions. But education today has squandered curiosity its students with thick layer textbooks and standardize tests. Students would spend hours of their days going over note or preparing for test than actually learn anything. Therefore, the purpose of education now had to light a spark of curiosity from the student because it allowed them to become more engaged in class and exploit the information to its fullest potential. Students often have often got the impression that if they got an answer wrong their peer will criticize them for it and because there is no one telling them “It’s ok.” The responsibility for that one answer is really heavy because education makes it so. Instead of giving a grade for every test they take and finalize them to GPA. Education should allow students a second chance to confront the responsibility. Responsibly is heavy when people think too much of it.
Curiosity in the classroom, independent thinking, and sense of responsibility are the missing purpose of education that will allow students to get more out of school than just plain information. Education can only work when educators know what the student needs and students know what they want. Educators and students are in a relationship somehow thing will work out as long as neither side give up.
An educational system should not control its students’ minds; instead, it should be arranged in a way that builds the students’ success with a goal to lead a person to conquer his/her purposes.
What is the purpose of education? A question that has been asked for centuries and defined in many ways; each theorist will argue their views on education is unsurpassed, yet it remains a question, that the future of our children depends upon. My personal philosophy of education is to create an environment that allows every child the freedom and ability to discover, create and pursue their interests; ultimately becoming the best they can, for an evolving and unpredictable future. Within this framework, the purpose being to encourage learning through children’s interests, by personalising education for the individual and interlacing subjects to engage and entice learning. While discussing my personal philosophy of education, I will explain the aim of education, consider the role of the teacher and the learner and present effective teaching methods and practices for within the classroom. This essay will demonstrate that Dewey, Friedman, Neill, Noddings, Robinson, and Zhao, support my personal philosophy and prove in contrast with the theories of Skinner and Rousseau.
What is the purpose of education? Is education about preparing students for a specific career or is it about teaching students lifelong values, discipline, and the ability to explore new ideas and to think independently? There have been several goals of education over the years. Some included preparing children for citizenship, to prepare for the skilled workforce, to teach literacy, to help students become critical thinkers and to help students compete in a global marketplace. I believe that for the 21st century , the purpose of education is to prepare children to compete in the global environment.
Education is undoubtedly one of the most important parts of any human society. Without it human beings could not have been at the current point of time where we all know tremendously about life and the universe. We are now better off than we were. However, it is clear that there is still huge variety of phenomena waiting for our discovery. The Encyclopedia Britannica states that the purpose of education is to “serve the needs of the individual and …. [to] serve the needs of society.” Although this view of education is obviously addressing education in a more general sense, my view of the purpose of K-12 education is the same. The purpose of K-12 education is namely, to develop the individual, making him somebody of whom he can be proud, and then secondly, to create somebody who is a benefit to society.
I believe that the purpose of education is to produce the next generation of leaders who are intelligent and have great character. This idea is supported in the article “The Purpose of Education” by Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist who fought for black and white people to have equal rights in America. He writes about the true purpose, and meaning of education in the article by saying, “Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction (MLK1).” This quote from the article explains that being academically educated is very important. Everyone has his or her own take on what they believe education is and should be. Your parents could think of it as a day care facility until you get to high school and then they might think of it as a place to earn a degree and soon move out. Your grandparents might think of it as a place where you go to learn things that you aren’t going to need in life because they never did. Political leaders may think of it as an economical advantage over another country. The list goes on, but as a student, I believe that there are many purposes of education; it is more than one thing, but many things that combine into what education really is.

It is not a single destination or a simple transaction. Education equals power, the power to create and fulfill your own destiny. Mark Van Doren, a profound influence on generations of students, described teaching as “the art of assisting discovery.”
The purpose of education is for a student to develop character, mental abilities, and physical abilities. This is why school and education are so important, because without these skills one cannot live up to his/her full potential or even function in society. My purpose as a teacher is to give students opportunities to succeed and not to give grades. My purposes are to make students aware of their capabilities and by discovering these capabilities develop a sense of self. The students do this by pushing themselves or trying to their fullest extent. By trying his/her hardest they will know their limitations. These areas are the purpose of education.

This produces an uninformed society who is trained to spit out information instead retaining it. My hometown, Scranton, also known as “the Electric City”, has an abundance of ignorant citizens. It was a very toxic community to grow up in. This affected the youth in the community by not projecting their potential into their minds. To have a well-educated populace, we need to make sure we graduate well-rounded youth after grade school. I believe this can be achieved by following common-core guidelines, while also striking their creativity within the subjects so that they are retaining information, not only memorizing it. I will discuss my beliefs on the roles of the teacher, the children as learners, the curriculum, and the purpose of schools in society.

One of the biggest problems with education is that it is poisoned in the way people view school. Some common phrases among students are that ?school is boring; school is work.? Theses attitudes have a direct effect on the effort that students put into their studies. One will obviously work harder when they aren?t bored with the task. There is a difference between hearing and listening and if students approach school as something that they see as boring and stressful than that student will only be hearing what the professor is saying. They may show up to class but this does not mean that they are necessarily there to learn. If school were fun than students would enjoy learning and thus, would learn more since it would be an enjoyable activity. School is just like a sport or a book in that if the book is well written and enjoyable than there is more incentive to read it, just as someone will put more effort into a sport that is fun than a sport they don?t enjoy. If school were fun, than students would strive to learn more.
The purpose of education is to teach the basics of knowledge and to challenge each individual to learn. The realization that I will have the power to make a difference in a child’s life is sometimes overwhelming. This remarkable fact gives me a stronger purpose – to be a positive role model for my students. Being an effective teacher is truly an awesome responsibility.
