The Purpose and Core Values of Higher Education: How Institutions May Improve
Purpose of Higher Education
For the Individual
In thinking about the purposes of higher education in regard to an individual, I feel that there are a few. First, the purpose for pursuing higher education for an individual is to have better job prospects than he or she would have with just a high school diploma. Second—and this is related to the first point—not only will a person have better job prospects than a person with a high school diploma, they will also have better job security and will not be as indispensable. Third, and last, pursuing higher education allows an individual to move up in status in their society.
For the Society
In thinking about the societal purposes of higher education, I also feel that there are a few. The first purpose of higher education is to have an educated society, which in contributing their newly learned skills, can better that society in various capacities. Continuing on, another purpose of higher education is that it provides a means for putting money into the society that could be used for other services.
Purpose Fulfillment
I have stated that my belief is that the intended purpose of higher education for both the individual and the society relies on similar factors, including general improvement and economic gains. While these intentions would be great if they were the actual outcomes of the higher education system, this is not the case for all purposes mentioned. Certainly, it is not always the case that people who obtained a college degree always have a higher paying job than someone with a bachelor’s degree or higher. The core values of improving student-advisor relationships, improving students’ financial literacy, and encouraging students’ professional development will help achieve purposes for higher education to individuals, as well as for the society as a whole. Student-advisor relationships could give knowledge to students so that they are able to make informed decisions about career paths and job prospects. Improving students’ financial literacy could help reduce student loan debt and therefore benefit the economy and society. Lastly, merely having a college degree does not indicate job readiness. If institutions committed to a value of professional development for their students, then students will be ready for the workforce, which is another purpose for higher education.
