The best way to carry out long-term goals is to set many small goals. Long-term goals are easy to become strenuous and taxing. Losing motivation or drive can often cause a goal to never be reached. Setting several short-term goals within a long-term goal creates an easier path to the next goal. Creating smaller goals also increases drive and attentiveness. Achieving a goal creates a sense of success and excitement to complete the next goal. Increased motivation results in achieving end goals quicker because of tasks getting done with more efficiency. It is important to keep goals within the characteristics of specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based. Making a specific goal, will make sure that there is no confusion and a clear, irrefutable path. Measurable goals make assessing progress easier while providing a way to know when one achieves a goal. Achievable goals are challenging, yet attainable and realistic. Making a goal relevant, ensures that the goal matters to the owner and that the goal is fully completed. Time-based goals give a time frame for achieving the goal. The first step in reaching a long-term goal is to understand the S.M.A.R.T. goal process. Simply using the words specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound can be a bit confusing. After a bit of research, I was able to better define the method. Using a S.M.A.R.T. Goal worksheet provided by Tatt (2012), I was able to understand the definition of each word in the acronym. In other words, specific stands for the who, what, where, why, and when of the goal. Measurable is explained by asking how much, how often, and how many. Attainable asks if the goal achievable. Relevant is defined as how it applies to your ultimate vision. Finally, time-bound is a time-restraint you establish to complete the specific goal. Furthermore, there is a section for intention or in other words, the long-term goal (Tatt, 2012). By filling out this worksheet I was able to first state my intention and then break it down further into smaller specific goals that would eventually lead up to the final picture. By choosing just one specific goal at a time and achieving that success, it becomes much easier to complete your overall dream.

Upon analyzes of the thought provoking topics within the book What Color Is Your Parachute?, it is difficult to not acknowledge career planning and goal setting is a process which successful professionals all undertake in some form. The idea, however, that is most captivating is in order to succeed individuals must not only understand their strengths and weaknesses, but also possess a complete understanding of themselves as individuals. Many of the choices made by young adults regarding career are made regarding their areas of expertise or passion. While these elements should be seen as factors in career decision-making, they are simply two components of an individual.

Career management is done with involved taking some necessary steps to reach the career plan and commonly more focusing on the ability of the organization able to do for their employee to increase their career development (Werner & DeSimone, 2009). Career plan is usually able to be performed, at least in some apart, through the training program which implemented by the organization. Career management process contained four steps which are self-assessment, reality check, goal setting and action planning (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).

Career development is a continuous process of handling proactively work and changes in life in order to move forward and reach the goals set for a better future. It involves learning new skills, moving up in the position within the organization or altogether moving to new organization or even starting up a new business. A career development plan is created to set goals and how to reach these goals using your talents and skills in the working world. A five year plan is ideal to start with, as five years are enough to reach bigger goals while working for and achieving smaller goals.
