Thirteen-year-old Laurel was called into the principal’s office one day to discuss her punishment for cheating on her math exam. Laurel was filled with despair when the principal said he was going to call her parents. She knew that her parents would be deeply disappointed and frustrated with her. In midst of the phone call, Laurel excused herself and went to the bathroom. There, she dug into her book bag for scissors and, with tears running down her face, she proceeded to slit her wrist. Luckily, Laurel was found by another student and was rushed to the hospital. Laurel did not die that day but she most definitely wanted too. The two most effective ways are by using a firearm and by overdosing. According to KidsHealth, “nearly 60% of all suicides in the United States are committed with a gun.” Therefore it is vital for all household firearms to be locked up and put out of the reach of children and teenagers. A teen can overdose on prescription medication just as easily as overdosing on over-the-counter medication. When I was younger, I was very depressed and contemplated on committing suicide in order to free myself of my problems. It was a very dark place. Praying, a wonderful psychologist, and the support of my family are what made me persevere and proceed with my life. I found faith in God, books, and my best friend. I lost so much time during this dark period, which caused my grades to fall drastically. I was determined to do everything I possibly could to make up for the lost time. That determination still pushes me today. This determination is what will help me reach my goals in school and beyond. This experience has also taught me to be more aware of the people who I interact with on a daily basis, mainly my family. I want then to be stable and not have to go through what I went through. I have a teenage brother that has had some problems in school. Now is the time for safe interaction and prevention. Now is the time to reach out to him and provide love and support.
