Of course, funding for the public education system is limited, and it could be argued that health education is not a worthy source of spending. According to these people, the education system’s limited resources could perhaps be better used for other subjects. While it is true that public schools could benefit from management of budget, health education is not the course to cut. Health education is undeniably essential to a proper education. As shown in statistics and reports, however, the California health education system needs to be reformed. The standards we hold for health education today are too low. The California State Board of Education’s standards should be changed to include a wider, more relevant range of topics. Meanwhile, health educators can work outside of the textbook and the curriculum to teach what is necessary to a complete health education but not required by the state. Slowly, California’s health education system can be changed for the better. If health education is reformed, we can look forward to a better educated, and thus healthier and more prepared student body.
