Psychology can be traced back to the times of the ancient Greeks. Psychology’s relevance dates back into the time before Christ and back to the present day to help all mental illnesses. Wilhelm Wundt was one of the first to study psychology in the mid 1800’s. He opened the world’s first psychology lab in 1879 which led to the start of psychology as an individual study or degree. Psychology went as far back as 387 B.C. when Plato said “the brain is the power of mental processes.” One would say that psychology became an important career in 1848 when it helped to diagnose or prove Phineas Cage’s condition. In 2002, the White House President George W. Bush promoted a legislation that would ensure comprehensive mental coverage.
Requirements to obtain a psychologist career
Acquiring a degree in psychology takes time. In order to become a psychologist, one needs to acquire at least a master’s, doctoral or specialist degree in psychology. He or she must also practice psychology. Every psychologist needs a license or certification. These requirements apply to all types of psychologists. The amount of time that it will take you to become a psychologist is determined by the career field that you want to work in and your specialty. There are several skills, expertise and traits that one should possess to be a productive psychologist. You must have literacy skills. This means that he or she should be trained to write in more than one format. He or she should also have good research skills. A successful psychologist should be an effective listener, aware, approachable, educated, ethical, affective communicator, versatile and confident. Clinical psychologists must also have analytic skills because they have to interpret information they receive from their clients. Science skills are also used due to the research and methods that are backed scientifically when treating patients. Clinical psychologists must possess people skills. Clinical psychologists must have regard for their patients to treat his or her disorder.


Job Outlook
The overall employment of psychologists is expected to increase 11 percent. As more people turn to Clinical psychologists for help, the demand for Clinical psychologists will increase. The projected employment of 2012-2022 is 165,500.
