In a freshman psychology class, a student learns many various things. A student can learn about what exactly is the psychology to what is considered language. In my intro to psych class, I can say I learned more things than I would learn in a psychology class. Some of the things that I learned that left an impact on my brain were heuristics, things needed to perform a case study, learning, and stress. Those five things that I learned definitely made me think of the world differently in ways I never would of before taking psychology. A case study is a research design that examines one person or a small number of people in depth often over an extended time period. The things that a doctor or a scientist need to do to perform a case study are informed consent, protection for the participant, and deception and debriefing. Informed consent is needed to actually perform the case study. A doctor needs to actually make sure the participant is protected and does not come to harm. Lastly, the doctor needs to have a session where they tell you step by step what happened during the procedure. As a student going into the medical field and dealing with patients ever day, it was an eye opener about all the things actually happen when doing a case study. What was even more shocking was that a group of doctors and scientists performed an experiment on a group of people in Tuskegee without their consent. Those people did not even know they were in an experiment and to make matters worse the doctors did not tell them that they had a cure for their disease. Ever since it has been introduced to me I always thought that the slang kids made up were considered language. After learning what language I had realized that it is not a language at all. In the memory chapter, we learned about different ways to store important information and where they are actually are stored. The different methods that we learned about where chunking, elaborative rehearsal, and rehearsal. Without realizing it I was already doing those things I just did not know the name of it. I realized I cannot just say this is an important memory I have to use the rehearsal method to store it longer in my brain. Mechanical or rote repetition of the information is a great way to remember this information. The more time you spend rehearsing the information the longer the information will be remembered. This is actually a poor way of remembering things because it doesn’t make the information meaningful; “surface processing”. Elaborative Rehearsal is a more effective way of remembering information through “deep processing”, which is relating the information to information you already know. This technique is used in more in the education system than maintenance rehearsal. Even with these two ways to store things we still run into filling errors. Filling errors are where your brain has filed information incorrectly. The final step in the memory process is retrieval. Retrieval is the locating of stored information and returning it into your conscious thoughts. There are a few cues that help us retrieve them, such as priming, context, and state. Priming is the nonconscious identification or words and objects, by referring in to particular representations or associations in the memory just before carrying out the action or task. The memories that come back to your conscious mind when you are in a certain place or area are called context, dependent memories. The Psychological Services at Fresno City provides free services for enrolled college students. These services are individual brief therapy, crisis intervention, group therapy, psychological testing, referral network, consultation, and also provide guest speakers for teachers who want their students to be informed in what is provided on campuses. If or when a student want to have a therapy session the student will be assigned to a therapist. The therapist will then learn from the student on what is going on and how to best help you. The student will receive eight sessions free in the first semester,then after two sessions for the subsequent semesters. Therapy sessions last about 50 mins long and are sequalded once a week. Also therapy is confidential and private. Therapy is a way to help students find different ways to cope, process difficult emotions or situations, and improve the students well-being.
For my psychology interview assignment, I had the privilege of interviewing Elaine, who is the Director of Preschool X, which is an educational institution. She reports that she has been in this position for 13 years since its inception. Elaine is a close friend of my aunt, which was how I was able to meet her. She explained that her responsibilities include; the hiring of all personnel related to the school, submission of criminal background checks, the medical reports for all staff and children must be current, and also developed a curriculum for the teachers to execute. She has parent meetings and she deals with parents on a daily basis. For any arising issues, Elaine conferences with parents at least once or twice a week. Have weekly staff meetings regarding the curriculum. She also plays the role as the educational event coordinator, where she would “invite people from the dinosaur museum or alley pond park to come over to her preschool, to enrich the children”.

It is said that “one in four people will experience mental health problems during their lives (Peate, 2013, p. 374).” Mental health problems can be experienced at any age but are usually predominant in children and young adults. My 10-month old son Jayden is in the first stage Infancy. The major life crisis of this particular stage is trust versus mistrust. For example, I on a daily basis read with my son and interact with him by playing with his toys with him that is an example of trust that I am building with him, but if I didn’t show affection, care, and reliability then that would lead to mistrust which results of him becoming fearful and believing the world is unpredictable and inconsistent. In this case Erikson crisis is being used in a positive way by me showing affection towards him so he can begin to trust the world and feel safe and secure from that surround him.

What is a case study? A case study is a process or record of research in which detailed consideration is given to the development of a particular person, group, or situation over a period of time. There is many different types of cases; rape, robbery, arson, kidnapping and finally murder. Case studies lead to trials;a formal examination of evidence before a judge, and typically before a jury, in order to decide guilt in a case of criminal or civil proceedings. One famous case study that went to trial was Jodi Arias Trial. Her case was her getting convicted of brutally murdering her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander.
Public Safety Officials have been battling the difficult question of profiling for quite a while. The question is how do they know the suspected individual fit the category associated with an offense? While it has been proven that many profiling cases are somewhat directed to a racial profile, it can be proven that people, given the discretion, are able to identify explanations for a series of behavioral events by identifying what that behavior accredits to. This theory, identified by Frite Heider, “suggested that we have a tendency to give casual explanations for someone’s behavior, often by crediting either the situation or the person’s disposition,” called the attribution theory. Until recently, a study of the like was considered to be a branch of sociology and not a form of psychology. Social psychology essentially became the focus on the individual rather than the group as a whole. Many thoughtful ideas are collected in response to the studies of social psychology. Human cognition is understood to arise from interacting socially; highlighting the importance of socialization. We use social cognition to develop our explanations and our ideas on why a person’s behavior is/does what it is/does.
Sigmund Freud’s Psychodynamic Theory suggests that human behavior and personality is influenced by unconscious motives. In the early 1900s, Freud proposed this theory, stating that the personality consists of the id, the ego, and the superego. Psychodynamic psychologists see behavior as a compromise between the three areas of our psyche. These psychologists study human behavior by looking for deeper meanings in peoples’ thoughts and actions. Today, many of Freud’s ideas have been criticized for being too abstract and objective, but that does not mean that his work is without merit. The Psychodynamic Theory has redefined patient-therapist relationships and our understanding of thought processes and response patterns.
Case studies are a collection of data obtained using various methods gathered on an individual or group to record areas of interest in order to assist with analysis and provide recommendations. The study should include the name of the person, although this should be protected to provide anonymity where appropriate, and a brief description of the subject. The setting where the study is to be performed should be included. The aim of the observation must be presented along with a report of the findings. The type of method used will depend upon the subject and the area of interest. Data is gathered on the subject in this case observations were used to provide the data. An interpretation of the study will be made in order to provide a conclusion and recommendations made if applicable. Freud famously used the case studies that he carried out on his patients to develop his Psychoanalytic Theory.
