The Psychological and Sociological Effects of GMO
What are sociological effects? They are the effects that people have on each other. It includes religious affiliations, the class in society we occupy, the laws of the land, and even sexuality. Interesting elements of the sociological study details the family and community structure, and the social culture of a group is developed through it. Race and religion are structured to reciprocate acceptance, and outsiders are commonly shunned.
These types of attitudes foster action, and are the basis for choices. With new technological avenues that open the doors for social networking an open channel for constant communication. This in turn affects people’s perceptions about other new technologies like GMOs, the elemental fundamental of sociology being people believe what they are told.

Most studies show that with them the first reaction is that they have an unnatural taste, they are unhealthy, and far less likely to be accepted - though studies did show that if a product was already naturally modified (like fast food) then the GMO equivalent was more easily accepted. This negative halo of GMO actually impacts the way we evaluate their risks and benefits. Psychologist Paul Slovic, while studying the risk perceptions that “when it comes to new, unknown technologies, data always loses out to emotion…and conclusions (are) not backed up by data and is at odds with the advice of most risk experts,” and that “when we’re in a state of heightened emotion, we don’t weigh risks and benefits equally—risks take on an outsized impact and benefits begin to pale in comparison.” (Akumo & Riedel,
Genetically modified? That alone should be a cause for alarm, and have you wondering, what exactly is in this that I am eating? Yet every day millions of American’s choose to load up on food filled with GMO’s, and not even know it. First we must understand what GMO’s are. GMO’s are any organism whose genetics has been altered using genetic engineering. We should not be tampering with nature, and should try to grow organically as much as possible. There has not been enough research on GMO’s to know the potential long term effects it can have on us, so this is why GMO’s should be banned.
GMO`s are starting to rapidly take over our food supply, but what exactly is a GMO? A GMO is a make up of DNA that is combined forcefully with a plant or animals DNA, and creates a new version of it. Seeing these products sold in stores for the first time people question what the change is from the natural, and organics, because when someone reads GMO they wonder if it is healthy and safe to consume.
When we genetically modify an organism, we are creating an entirely new species. This can mean disaster for the surrounding natural organisms. These GM crops, which have been created to fight pests and weeds, can easily win in a competition for survival. Long-term effects include endangering these unmodified species, or even driving them to extinction. Another problem is that consumers don’t know when they’re eating GM foods. You might be allergic to fish, and then you go grocery shopping. You buy tomatoes to use in your dinner that night, with no knowledge that they have fish genes that can trigger your allergies. Allergic reactions to these modified foods are just another issue that comes up when GMOS come into play. Also, when we buy these foods, we’re supporting big industries that have patents on all these crops. The fact that people can patent crops just because they stuck some new DNA in them doesn’t make sense to begin with, but furthermore, the local, organic farmers who don’t want to, or can’t afford to pay these industries to use their patented crops are losing business.
The audience that my paper would pertain to would be Scientists. In today’s society many scientists have been researching the positives and negatives of GMO products. These scientists are involved in this topic due to the intense debate and amount of new information that had yet to been discovered. The reasons many scientists are interested in this topic would due to many saying there are health risks that come with eating GMO products. The views that these professionals hold that will help me would be their position or authority on the subject. Also their view on the subject can also help when needing a valid opinion on the subject.

There are two sides to every coin, and the topic of GMO foods is a prime example of this. An assessment of GMOs analyzes and weighs the risks and benefits on health. Anti-GMO advocates point out the undeniable truth that genetic modification of plants and animals can cause bacterial resistance to develop. They also claim that GMOs increase allergy and cancer rates but this information is mostly unfounded as of today. Of course, GMOs have only been around for about two decades and extensive long-term studies are still required. On the other hand, pro-GMO people have pointed out that resistant and durable GM crops produce higher yields and create abundance. With a higher food supply, there is more accessibility and therefore, more nutrition to go around. Finally, some GMO foods are even being modified with the intention of treating worldwide health problems through people’s diets. The benefits are huge and the risks are minimal. If you read the paper or watch the news, you’re undoubtedly aware of the debate raging over genetically modified food. Is it bad or is it good? Between the feuding sides, you might find yourself a little lost and wondering which side is right. Answers to seemingly simple questions have been blurred or exaggerated by both sides. On one side genetically modified food is more sustainable, safe, cheaper, easier to grow and has the potential of creating disease-fighting foods. Although this is positive and good intentioned, there may be unintended consequences that we have been quick to overlook. Those opposing genetically modified food clam that it is dangerous, harms the environment, increases health risks, and causes infertility and weight gain. Even things like the declining bee population may have closer ties to modified food than previously thought. We must look to science for answers. The two groups include the pro-camp, which fully supports GMOs, and the anti-camp, which is completely against GMOs. Between the two groups, there are major differences of opinion, scientific studies are interpreted with distinct disparities, and the proposed long-term benefits are argued intensely. Due to the varied sentiments regarding GMOs, governments and consumers have been unable to agree on laws to regulate the research or the implementation of GMOs.
Over time, the human species has applauded themselves for their advances in things like science, technology, medicine, and engineering. In a video I searched online, by Jimmy Fallon, he was interviewing people on the streets and was asking them, “what are GMOs?” An individual had said that GMOs are “corn bad stuff”, so a lot of people say that GMOs are bad, but they don't really know what they are. Because GMOs are made in a lab, people are afraid of having unnatural foods in their bodies and that gives them a reason to go against
GMOs or GI Joes? When I first began my research on GMOs, the name always reminded me of GI Joes. Well soon after learning what GMOs are, I quickly found out that the two have no relation. (GMO Education) In easier to understand terms, GMO’s are basically organisms that have been genetically altered from its original state. Genetically Modified Organisms are in everyday food and people don't realize it, and its not something that can just be seen. Looking at the box cannot determine if it is modified. Laboratories modify these seeds to improve desired traits about them, for example; the resistance to herbicides or to make certain animals not attracted to eating them. If crops were affected by droughts, disease and insects, having destroyed many acres across America’s Midwest region, the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) would not be beneficial in regenerating new crops. Genetically modifying foods (GMOs) “are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding” (nongmoproject.org). Most research done has concluded no positive benefits in using GMOs. There are serious health risks associated with eating GM foods based on scientific research done around the world. The purpose of GMOs are to increase production of crop yield and reduce pesticide use but research says otherwise. If farmers wanted to continue using GMOs to produce crops, labeling should be mandatory to allow consumers to have a conscious choice whether or not to eat GM food. Through research it has been proven that the use of GMOs to increased production of crops during a time of drought or disease have no benefits, just risks.
