Prostitution is the act of selling ones body for any type of sexual intercourse in exchange for money. Today, both men and women are willingly and forcefully engaged into the industry of sex and prostitution. It is most common for young teenage girls to be involved into this industry rather than a male or older woman. There are several different ways to how individuals are first brought into prostitution. One way is to be kidnapped and forcefully put on to the streets by a "Guerilla Pimp". "Guerilla Pimps" are the men who use their ability and force to kidnap young girls and throw them on to the streets to work as prostitutes (Youth Radio). Another way to be introduced to prostitution is by being persuaded by "Romeo Pimps". "Romeo Pimps" are the men who sweet talk you into situations and act like nothing is wrong with it (Youth Radio). Many of the girls who are thrown or introduced into prostitution, usually have no way of escaping. Pimps would keep eyes on them twenty-four-seven, and if not themselves, they would have partners to keep a look out on them, so no escape would be possible. Many people are so quick to judge a person by their actions and life style, but don't know the history. It is one of the worlds oldest professions and still stands strong in our country today. Prostitution has been around since the Sumerian times dating all the way back to 2400 B.C. Prostitution was first introduced to America in the 16th century during the Colonial times when the British invaded America. During the 1700s, prostitutes started to invade the cities of Boston and New York. On July 5, 1870, The Board of Health gained power through an act called The Social Evil Ordinance that allows and "requires registration" for prostitutes to be ... ... middle of paper ... ...illegal sex trade would take place. The black market is illegal due to the fact that people are involved with selling or trading items that violate certain laws. Prostitutes are not being taxed lawfully and it would violate the economic laws of selling or trading items. Prostitution is an issue that has been around for centuries. Many have tried to legalize prostitution, not only for themselves, but for the country. Back in 2004, Berkeley, California tried to legalize prostitution, but didn't have much of a success with only 36 percent of the votes. As well as Proposition K back in 2008, they too tried to legalize prostitution but came up with only 41 percent to secure the votes of yeses. Every couple of years, individuals are taking risks in order to legalize prostitution. Would legalizing prostitution in our country make it a better and safer environment?
Prostitution has been as issue in many societies around the world for almost all of recorded history. There has been evidence of brothels and prostitution dating far back into human history. Many different societies have different views, ideals, and reservation about the matter. Some cultures around the world view it as a necessary evil for people who need to support themselves and their families. Others view it as morally evil and socially destructive; helping to rot our society from the inside out. Even still there are cultures who don’t view it as evil at all and even a normal part of life. A person’s view on the act is formed largely based on the culture they are living in. Even sub cultures inside of larger one can have different view on the matter, such as religious groups that denounce it, to some groups in the same culture that say it is okay. Even the gauge of how industrialized a country can determine how that culture views prostitution, with many third world countries being more lenient on the matter, and many first world countries being much more strict on the matter, such as the some of the countries in Europe and also the United States.
When looking at legalized prostitution you see safer and healthier women, and shouldn’t that always be the point of everything we do? To answer this question it is important that you understand what prostitution is. As defined by the Merriam –Webster dictionary prostitution is “the act of having sex in exchange for money”. In most of the United States prostitutes or sex workers work on the streets, shady alleys or what some would refer to as “crack houses”. Prostitution is sometimes referred to as the longest standing profession, and what is very clear is that it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Brothels and prostitution was frequent and rampant in the past. If you look into ancient Roman society you will find a great deal of art depicting sexual acts between, men and women along with sexual acts between homosexuals. It is also important to know the difference between legalizing prostitution and decimalizing prostitution. Legalizing prostitution means creating a system of regulation with government control. Decimalization means removing all laws against prostitution.
Prostitution is not a crime. Many women consider prostitution an easy alternative for a job. Allowing prostitution can make women warning as prostitutes feel confortable and go to the doctor often for checkups. Women should be able to do what they want with their bodies after all. They own their bodies. With the legalization of prostitution the rape cases would decrease.
Decriminalizing prostitution tolerates an industry that destroys and abuses people, particularly women. Keeping prostitution illegal in America has created an environment in which sex workers are subjected to violence, illness, mockery, and discrimination. Prostitutes are people and they have lives too. Banning prostitution will continue the allowance of hard-working citizens to be cheated out of their money his/her money through taxes. Just because some people are uncomfortable with prostitution does not mean that they have to partake in it. Today it’s illegal to prostitute, tomorrow it may be illegal to sell your own ideas and inventions. It’s time to stand up and stop letting the government control us
Prostitution is looked down on as an immoral activity. Some people do not even consider it to be a profession. It is indeed morally wrong but maybe it is considered so because of social norms. Women who participate in this profession are seen as harlots and tramps and a disgraceful member of society. Some of these women are addicted to drugs, they have no other choice but to be involved in the profession while others have been coerced into it. Most of their backgrounds involve terrible role models while others have parents that forced them into doing these acts.
Known as the world's oldest profession, prostitution is still one of the most controversial issues in our modern day society. We are able to trace the career all the way back to the ancient Sumerians, one of the earliest civilizations, that is dated as far back as 5500 BC. Prostitution has been present in nearly all cultures and eras and, in a large portion of them, it was not a profession that was controversial or disrespected for either gender. In today's day and age however, it is rarely considered a proper occupation. Lena Edlund discusses this idea with a more business-oriented approach of prostitution in the Journal of Political Economy when she stated, “Prostitution has an unusual feature: it is well paid despite being low-skill, labor intensive and, one might add, female dominated. Earnings even in the worst paid type, street-walking, may be several multiples of full time earnings in professions with comparable skill requirements.” (Edlund, "A Theory of Prostitution") If everyone were to address the idea of prostitution in the same way that Edlund did, perhaps more people would begin to view it as an occupation rather than a disgrace. So why is it that today prostitution is criminalized, those who take part in sex work are extremely ostracized, and the rights and safety of those working in the business are not better addressed or carried out?
In conclusion, prostitution should be legalized for the well being of all parties. Labor laws would protect prostitutes, money would be saved on pointless investigations, and the number of Sexually Transmitted Diseases could be potentially decreased. Legalized prostitution could be altered to protect women; laws have to be specific and strict. Prostitution is inevitable, and those who practice it are not criminals.
When people think prostitution they think of sex for money, diseases, crime, work place violence such as rape and also robbery. In every way they are right. Prostitution has become one of our major issues in the U.S. It has caused spreading of disease, unplanned pregnancy, deaths and robbery. You would think that with all the issues given with prostitution that we should continue with its illegalization, but that’s incorrect. Like many crimes prostitution is one that can never be completely contained. Though the use of marijuana is illegal, someone as simple as a middle school student can obtain it. Though the drinking age is obviously the age of twenty-one, many college or high school
As a matter fact, the majority of the men and women who enter prostitution do it because they are financially disadvantaged and have no other options. Our society economically and institutionally oppressed people with lower socioeconomic status and criminalizing prostitution is just another form of systematic suppression. Furthermore, criminalizing someone because of their profession is immoral in the sense that we as a society have failed to protect the most vulnerable individuals in our society. Providing sex workers with a safe way to live their life is the moral thing to do. I’m aware that in our society, there are those who have the sentiment that prostitution is inherently immoral, however, I would argue that universally, exchanging services for money is a business ideal that is considered permissible in every society and even encouraged in most. Thus, there really is no harm in legal prostitution as long as no one is harmed in the process and everyone involved is upholding the
Most importantly, prostitution could help our economy with a new source of income. In a typical year, legal brothels generate about $50 million in total revenue and have an economic impact of about $400 million on the state. With taxes and even a price floor prostitution could prove to be one of the United States’ best source of income. If prostitution was legalized it might have made the United States enough money to get us out of the huge debt were in.
According to ProCon.org, prostitution was a profession that dated back to 2400 B.C. Though many things since then have changed, the practice of selling sex has been more or less the same. What has changed is the way that people now view the practice. Throughout the years the debate has been whether prostitution should become legal or illegal. Organizations like Amnesty International want to push forward the idea of legalizing consensual “sex work” between two adults who are willingly participating because it would help keep those in that line of work safer than they are now. While on the other side of the issue there are
...wish to legalize prostitution have a personal interest in the matter. What it all boils down to is one’s selfish desire for a service that will hurt someone else, while others will make money from brothels and the prostitutes. The money exchange will probably include the government. The State should choose to leave this illegal act of sex trade alone. The decision to legalize prostitution will make us all responsible, and cause a division within the community. There is a reason prostitution is already illegal. Although I do not know why prostitution is illegal, but I know why it should stay illegal. The government does not have a regulated structure implemented to control prostitution. Lawmakers can create a policy to organize the legalization of prostitution, but not all people will adhere to the structure. The ongoing controversy exists, therefore, let it exist.
By criminalizing prostitution will force the workers to make the job an underground operation. Which in turn will make it harder for these “working women and men” to receive appropriate aid, leaving them in the shadows of uncertainty and potentially abuse.
We hear people talking about prostitution in music, movies, shows, etc. and yet it bypasses us into this normality, we don’t really even stop and analyze what prostitution actually means. Prostitution is people (more likely to be girls and kids) who are forced to have sex in exchange for money and were mostly kidnapped and had no choice but to be in this industry. People are well aware that prostitution exists in places all over the world, some people agree with it, and yet so many of those people do not realize the actual dangers behind this act and don’t see how it’s affecting us as a society. According to (Amon, Joseph.,Wurth, Margaret., McLemore, Megan. 2015) prostitution is the oldest “profession” known to man. Up until recently,
Prostitution is known as the oldest profession in the world, however, many states in the U.S. outlaw it. The textbook definition of prostitution is the "act or practice of engaging in sexual acts for money" ("Prostitution," Macmillan 805). Nevada is the first in the United States to legalize prostitution. Although the long term effects of legalized prostitution is uncertain, the short term effects have been economically beneficial. Prostitution should be legalized because not only could it financially benefit the country, but it could also reduce crime.
