Prosperity in New York in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a book about following the American Dream in 1922. The story takes readers through a time of great prosperity in New York and the two sides of Long Island, East and West Egg. Nick Carraway has moved from the Midwest and is in New York to learn the bond business and is introduced to many different characters throughout the book including: Daisy and Tom Buchanan, George and Myrtle Wilson, Jordan Baker and Mr. Jay Gatsby himself. After a complicated set of events, Gatsby, George and Myrtle are dead. George is the one who pulled the trigger on Gatsby, but is not fully responsible for Gatsby’s death. There are many people involved that cause the chain of events to happen that ultimately lead to Gatsby’s death. There are three main people responsible for his death; Daisy takes advantage of Gatsby the second she is reunited with him and triggers George’s desire to kill Gatsby by killing Myrtle, while Tom never liked Gatsby from the second he met him and starts all events that lead to his death. Gatsby has so much love and need for Daisy that he lets it consume him and everything that he does which greatly contributes to his death.
Daisy Buchanan is one of the major characters involved with Gatsby’s death. After being reunited with Gatsby at Nick’s house one afternoon, she begins seeing him more often. This however causes Tom to become suspicious of Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship. For instance, Gatsby invited them both to one of his parties and Tom made sure to keep tabs on Daisy the whole night. This shows how Tom never trusted or liked Gatsby. When Daisy, Tom, Gatsby, Jordan and Nick head to the hotel suite one hot afternoon, Daisy hurts Gatsby by going back to Tom after the big arg...

...ke you’d run over a dog and never even stopped his car.’”(191). Tom let his hatred for Gatsby get the best of him and let George believe that Gatsby was the one driving the car that killed Myrtle.
Although George is the one who directly killed Gatsby, Tom, Daisy and Gatsby himself had an indirect role in killing him. Daisy was the one who ran over Myrtle and let Gatsby take the blame. Gatsby let his love for Daisy have power over him. This then made Wilson go out and kill Gatsby because he was the supposed driver of the car that ran over his wife. When Myrtle was killed, Tom made sure that no fingers were pointing at him and more in the direction of his neighbor across the bay. He had reason for revenge on Gatsby – the affair with Daisy and supposedly killing Daisy. In conclusion, Gatsby’s death was caused my a combination of Daisy, Tom, George and Gatsby himself.
