Proso Millet as an Alternative Crop
Proso millet, Panicurn miliaceum (L.), is a warm season grass that is capable of producing seeds within a short growing season of 60 to 100 days (Boland, 2003). Proso millet possesses many unique characteristics that make it a promising alternative cash crop for the Great Plains region of United States. There is much potential for beneficial results if proso millet is further integrated into the cropping scheme of the Great Plains. Reasons for looking further into proso millet include benefits in crop rotation with wheat, and its characteristic ability to be used to produce ethanol, as well as other products.
Proso millet commonly grows up to four feet tall, and the seeds are small round seeds about two millimeters in diameter (Proso Millet, 1996). Other common names for proso millet include millet, yellow millet and yellow hog. (Baltensperger) Proso millet traces its origins back to ancient times when it was grown as a cereal grain. Proso millet has been grown in many areas of the world, including Russia, China, Romania, Afghanistan, Turkey, and India (Baltensperger). In many of these countries, proso millet is produced as a human food source (Boland, 2003). Currently, proso millet is produced in the United States primarily for birdseed and livestock feed (Boland, 2003). In the United States, proso millet is also used in some products made for human consumption. The majority of proso millet grown in the United States has white or yellow seeds, however, some red seeded proso millet is also grown (Boland, 2003).

Crops need nutrients and fertilizer, just like people might take vitamins to help them stay strong and healthy. Farmers test the soil to determine just which nutrients are needed in each field. Wheat is planted with a drill, which is pulled by a tractor. A drill makes a “furrow”; the farmer opens the center of the furrow, drops in a line of seeds, and then covers the seeds with a thin layer of soil. Wheat is harvested with a self-propelled machine called a “combine”. The combine shakes and beats the wheat seeds out of the heads and separates the kernels from all the other plant materials. Proper characterizing and understanding of locations is very important for screening breeding lines of greater concentration of zinc and iron in the grain (Ortiz- Monasterio et al., 2007).

As the world population grows at an astonishing rate, our mother earth is getting very crowded. Our natural resources are being overused and the land available for life is getting smaller and smaller. Farmers have to find ways to make what land they have usable and profitable. Farmers in general are a shrinking population. How does this relate to the general public? Without farmers we would not have food, without food we will all die. The world is realizing this problem and the best way to solve it is to find more land for habitat. We can not tack on a few million acres to earth and start using that, so we have to find somewhere else to go.

The most commonly encountered species of sorghum in Africa is Sorghum bicolor (Harland & de Wet, 1972; Norman, Pearson, Searle, 1995). It is a cereal grain plant of the family Gramineae. Historically, Sorghum bicolor is a grass species mainly cultivated for food to feed humans and animals and for producing ethanol (CAC, 2011). It originated in northern Africa, but now cultivated widely in tropical and subtropical regions. The crop although treated as an annual, is a perennial that is mostly found in the tropics and harvested many times (Stroade, Boland & Taylor, 2013). Barley is a very important grain in the world today. It is very versatile in every way. It has been well adapted through its evolution. It has a very mysterious and much debated beginning. Now however, barely has become well known and so have its many uses. Barley, which is of the genus Hordeum, is a cereal that belongs to the grass family Poaceae. Barley has many different varieties. The most common is Hordeum vulgare, which is a six-rowed type of barley that has a spike notched on opposite sides with three spikelets on each notch. At each notch there is a flower or floret that later develops into a kernel. Hordeum distichum is a two-rowed type of barley that has central florets producing kernels and it has lateral florets that are sterile. Lastly there is Hordeum irregulare which has fertile central florets and different arrangements of sterile and fertile lateral florets. This is the least cultivated species of the three main forms (2).
