In order to effectively be able to analyze the need for flexibility in the work place in regards to work shifts, it is important to research the pros and cons. Analyzing the pros and cons will help with the decision making process about whether or not flexibility of work shifts should be allowed in the work place. When allowing employees to work different shifts, Scheduling meetings can be difficult as you will need to be mindful of everyone’s time for meetings. A meeting may need to be scheduled to discuss something very important within the company and everyone may not be available whereas if everyone were in an office setting management could just call everyone into a conference room and discuss the matter at hand. Also, when employees have different schedules it may be difficult to evaluate each employee and develop a scale to rate each employee. A way to solve this would be to set and establish goals with each of the employees and then have monthly meeting with them in order to track their progress for those specific goals. By setting and establishing goals performance would not have to be tracked compared to peers but rather individually based on what was established at the beginning of the year. When it comes to promotions and being able to promote employees, it could be difficult for management to review employees work and consider them for promotion. Based on the observation above, the pros could outweigh the cons and there is a solution that could be made available to every con listed. Nurses who worked for a longer time and for 12 hour shifts do find it effective as well as a better balance with work, family, and patients. In the article, “12-Hour Shifts”, Hallie Shafer, an RN and BSN who worked for more than 8 years and around 12 hour shifts, explains, “I think that it’s great for both work and you’re outside life.” She also tells, “At work, you can have the continuity of care with the patients. You’re with them for a full 12 hours.” Shafer will also schedule her 12-hour shifts for three days at the beginning of a week and at the end of the following week. This way she can get back to seeing her family and friends.
Flextime - a versatile work program - permits individuals to determine on when they work, as long as they place in their total range of hours each week. We have all experienced a jet-lag before, which means we feel tired or even sick because of the time zone change that we have experienced during traveling. This change of sleeping pattern also occurs in the daily lives of those who work with irregular working hours. In hospitals it is very common to change shifts from day to night time due to the fact that hospitals are needed all day around, every day of the year. The staff members mostly take turns with the night shift, which is of course not an arbitrary decision. Due to the increasing demand for flexible working hours, there is also an increase of concerns in safety and productivity regarding the employees. This analysis discusses certain mental and physical health problems that occur with shift-work in hospitals and how these effects can hinder performance. Furthermore I will compare theory with real life practice in the field of shift work.

Hospitals who are short of staff should make it mandatory that all workers be able to work at least one weekend throughout the month or have rotating shifts.
