Facebook.com is a social networking website, founded in February of 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes, and Andrew McCollum, though before the biographical fiction film The Social Network (2010) (IMDb), no one knew about the later four. Originally it was reserved for students attending Harvard University, before later expanding to include most Ivy League schools, and then most American colleges. Only since 2006 has Facebook been open to all ages (thirteen years and older) and education levels, as it is today (Abram). Facebook is increasingly built to enable multimedia networking, with apps for mobile devices and the ability to upload photos and videos.

Facebook users enjoy the convenient communication, cute baby photos, mindless minigames, and reconnecting with long lost friends. Facebook’s chat feature is pleasantly simple and streamlined alternative to such instant message services as Skype and Ovoo, both of which require installation. Additionally, you don’t have to go through the hassle of tracking down all of your friends and family, as they’re already connected to your account. Facebook’s international accessibility and intense popularity ensures that more likely then not, all of your elementary school classmates have an account—even that one kid that moved to Moscow. Beyond keeping up with your friends, it can connect users with people of similar interests in your area, and around the world. Subscribing to your favorite bands’ and television shows’ pages is a good wait to stay up-to-date with album releases and premieres, with updates integrated into your personal newsfeed.
