Public opinion within all sectors of society throughout the interwar period was becoming a problem for the Nazis, especially with burdens of tax and compulsory donations to the party, which were not helping economically, even though quality of life may have been improving in some parts of the country, it was not enough for the rest; specifically the agricultural section, with Government orders being reduced in the period of 1936-1939, in preparation for impending war. Propaganda became a vital part of the Nazi Party’s policy to deter unrest throughout Germany. The Nazis saw the importance of propaganda throughout their meteoric rise to power, and in 1933 the Ministry of Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda was set up, Goebbels commented ‘the new Government no longer intends to leave the people to their own devices . The Nazis used this ministry to promote their values, to gain the support of the masses. A proportion of this propaganda endorsed hatred towards political enemies and inferiors, to somewhat remove the blame away from the Nazis; an example of this being the communists, who were swiftly arrested as soon as the Nazi Party would come to power. Obviously it was not just the communists who had been the focus of Nazi hate propaganda, a majority of the demonization was against the Jews and Gypsies. Not only this, the Nazis used propaganda as a way of creating a sense of national pride through portraying the Germans as ‘Aryans’, and the superior race. They conveying this opinion through all newspapers, which helped the Nazis brainwash not only the German public into agreeing with their ideology, but other countries believing that the regime had rapidly improved Germany. However these news outlets did not cover the news from an objective point which meant that by 1939 readership was down dramatically, since the people had distaste for the lack of choice when it came to newspapers and had enough of the same ideology day in day out. This shows that newspapers were becoming a thing of the past with relatively new technology like films and radio becoming a major part of the media.
