Health Determinants and Wellness Promotion The determinants of health are factors that can affect the health and well-being of individuals and populations. Health determinants includes risk factors and barriers that can negatively affect an individual health. Understanding the determinants of health is important for positive inventions necessary to improve health and longevity. In 1974, H.L. Blum, proposed an “Environment of Health” model, that implied there are four major inputs that contributed to health and well-being (Shi et al. 2015). The main components are environment, lifestyle, heredity, and medical care. Together these components address the health status of an individual or a population (Shi et al. 2015). Genetic factors predispose individuals to certain diseases. Some biological and genetic factors affect specific populations more than others. For example, sickle cell is a condition that individuals inherit when both parents carry the gene for sickle cell (“Determinants of Health”). The gene is most common in people with ancestors from West African countries, Mediterranean countries, South and Central countries, Caribbean islands, and India (“Determinants of Health”). For the individuals are predisposed to certain disease, access to medical care can help manage and control …show more content…
As risk factors and diseases can begin early in life, wellness promotion and disease prevention efforts are significant for delaying premature death, delaying premature death, improving quality of life, and lessening the economic burden on the health care system (Slawson, et al. 2013). Regular health assessments are key elements of wellness promotion and disease prevention. When an individual has established a relationship with a primary care provider, that provider can look for changes through regular screening. When a person visits their physician at least once a year, the individual can reduce the risks of a health issue going undetectable. According to 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, 40% of those with diabetes were undiagnosed and one in three Americans were found to be at risk for diabetes based on impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance (Slawson, et al. 2013). According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, dietary interventions have shown promise for primary prevention of some types of disease, such as diabetes and cancer (Slawson, et al. 2013). Physical activity also play an important role in disease prevention. The prevalence of osteoporosis had been estimated 8% among US women 20% years of age and older (Slawson, et al. 2013). Prevention of fractures had been found to be strongly related to calcium and vitamin D
According to the World Health Organisation (2017) the social determinants of health are defined as the conditions where people are born, grown, work and live, which also includes the health system. The social determinants of health determined populations health’s outcomes and therefore linked with health inequalities (WHO, 2017)

Over the years, the social determinants of health (SDOH) have been receiving more attention due to its importance in determining peoples’ health access, health quality and health outcome. The social determinants of health have been described by various scholars as the situation or environmental condition in which people are born, or where they grow, live and work; unfortunately these conditions have continued to affect and determine people’s ability to access proper care.1-5 In other words, the SDOH continues to consciously and unconsciously influence people’s access to most opportunities in life including access to healthcare services both in developed and developing countries.2 This issues have continue to deteriorate in most developing countries increasing people’s susceptibility to multi-morbidity among different age groups, with a slight increase among the elderly.6
The health of an individual and their communities is affected by several elements which combine together. Whether an individual is healthy or not, is determined by their circumstances and environment.1 To a greater extent, factors such as where an individual lives, their relationships with family and friends, the state of their environment, income, genetics and level of education all have significant impacts on health, however the more frequently considered factors such as access and use of health care facilities regularly have less of an impact.6 Determinants of health is a term which was introduced in the 1970s as part of a broader analysis of research and policy on public health. Researchers argued that there was a lot of attention and too much expenditure on health being dedicated to individuals and their illnesses, and little or no investment in populations and their health. It was decided that public health should be more concerned with social policies and social determinants than with health facilities and the outcomes of diseases.7 The determinants of health include social and economic environment, physical environment and an individual’s behaviour and characteristics. The environment of an individual determines their health, holding responsible an individual for having poor health or acknowledging them for good health is inappropriate. Individuals are not likely to be able to control several of the determinants of health. These determinants that make individuals healthy or not include the factors above, and numerous others.6
Social determinants of health has been a large topic for many years and can have a positive and negative effect on individuals, families and communities. (World Health Organisation, 2009) The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels, which are themselves influenced by policy choices. Social determinants have many factors and in this essay education will be the main social determinant of health discussed and how this could have an impact on the physical and mental sides of health.
Social determinants include factors, which involve an individual’s health condition pertaining to their way of living (Healthy People 2020, 2016). The conditions in where individuals are born, live, go to school, worship, participate in activities, should all be considered when discussing

When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
Health promotion is the process of improving health status of a person and prevention of disease by enabling the person to take control of their health. It is not just the absence of disease (Maben, & Clark, 1995). Health psychology is a relatively new concept rapidly growing and could be defined as the biological and psychological influences affect ones behaviour also bringing in social influences of health and illness (MacDonald, 2013). Biological determinants consider genetic and biological factors of an illness whereas psychological determinants focus on the psychological factors such as why people behave the way they do when dealing with issues such as anxiety and stress. Models such as the Health Belief Model and Locus of Control were developed in attempt to try and explain psychological issues around a chronic illness such as breast cancer (Ogden, 2012). Sociological factors can cause an enormous amount of pressure for one to behave in a certain way for example gender roles in society and religious considerations when dealing with health beliefs. Health Beliefs can be defined as one’s own perception to their own personal health and illness and health behaviours (Ogden, 2012). There are also theories and models used to explain pain and coping with diagnosis such as Moos and Schaefer (1984) Crisis theory and Shontz (1975) cycle of grief people go through when being diagnosed with a serious illness.
If one wants to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life they must know what it truly means to be well. Living a wellness lifestyle means incorporating all aspects of what it takes to flourish as a human being. It goes beyond the health of the physical body and incorporates the important social, emotional, and spiritual factors that play a part in every person’s life in one way or another. Knowing how to act correctly, control our feelings, channel our frustrations, and improve in each dimension of wellness will lead to a satisfactory life. Spiritual, physical, emotional, nutritional, and social wellness define the biggest components of life and thriving in them is vital.
Wellness is defined as “an active life-long process of becoming aware of and making choices to achieve optimal health and a more successful and balanced existence” (Ren et al., 2007). Wellness incorporates the spiritual, emotional and social wellbeing of an individual. When it came to thinking, planning and developing my SMART goal I decided to focus on my physical health as this was an area that I needed to improve the most and would also contribute positively to my spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual and environmental wellbeing aswell. In this reflective essay I will discuss and reflect on this journey. This reflection will include why I decided to focus on this specific SMART goal aswell as how I found the SMART goal journey. I will then discuss my own view on my attitudes for health and wellness and will discuss what a SMART goal is and the importance of them in order to start working towards those goals and to positively change behaviours and habits. This reflection will also include challenges that may be experienced in relation to behaviour change. These may include time management and motivation.
