Controlling a project is included in the monitoring and controlling process group. The monitoring and controlling process group includes those processes for tracking, reviewing, and orchestrating the progress and performance of the project. The control of a project includes the controlling of changes and corrective or preventive actions for anticipated problems. The process of controlling projects also includes controlling the cost, quality, communications, procurement and stakeholder engagement. The monitoring and control of a project is not only focused on the processes within this Process Group but, the monitoring and control of the entire effort.
Planning and Controlling are two separate process groups but are interrelated and the scope of both process groups overlap each other. Work performance data includes the percent of work complete, technical performance measures, schedule activities, number of defects, etc. Work performance information will include status of deliverables, status of change requests, along with forecasted completion. Work performance reports is information intended to generate decisions, actions or awareness. These reports are status reports, electronic dashboards, recommendations or justification. No matter what the project information is, the key is disseminating the information to the appropriate individuals by the most effective means whether verbally, in a report, or stored somewhere.
