The project management chapter of Western Michigan founded the annual collegiate project management competition or also known by its students and Alumni as “The Project”. In the initial stages of forming this competition, Kelly Talsma, the vice president of education committee, explains how Western Michigan’s educational committee met to generate different ideas (THE project video “vision.” 2016). The committee thought it was important to inspire students and get communal leaders together allowing students and their influential mentors to learn from one another and network. Ted Kallman, the vice president of Western Michigan’s Project management Institution, suggested this competition where the business and academic community could relate with one another and the mentors could use their real life experience to hone their leadership and project management abilities (THE project video “vision.” 2016).
Once “The Project” was set in motion, the committee produced several names of people with in its own community to be the judges in this competition. Within these 5 judges picked were politicians, CEO’s, and local media celebrities in influential positions. After the high profile panel was selected and organized by the committee, many schools and academic institutions jumped at the change to be involved in this opportunity. Local businesses too witnessed the suddenly growth of “The Project” and also provided their knowledge and understanding of real-world experiences to mentor the teams of collegial students joining the competition (THE project video “vision.” 2016).

Mentors encouraged students to rise to the challenge by presenting three deliverables from the established scope organized by the educational committee. In the beginning the students didn’t know what to expect, many where not project management majors nor had project management backgrounds. When the competition was complete the winning team received a cash prize. All participants were able to network with companies and perspective employers with in their community, several believed that being able to do this offered them opportunities they wouldn’t have had otherwise. The judges and mentors where excited to observe all the students involved in the competition felt their experienced was a positive one. (THE project video “vision.” 2016).
