Faculty of Technology and Built Environment Department of Civil Engineering ENGG DE5204 Highway Engineering 1 Semester 1 2014 Project title: Dominion Road Upgrade Author: Mohammed Bin Shaihoun Date: 13/04/2014 Introduction We were told by our lecturer to choose a project, weather it is completed or still in operation from Auckland transport website. During this, I have been looking through some projects and finally I ended up with choosing Dominion road upgrade project, as it is one of the main streets in Auckland. This project is basically about improving and reducing the traffic in the road, especially in the rush hours, from 7am-9am. Background Dominion road is one of the busiest commuters routs in Auckland’s transport system. It plays a noteworthy role in moving huge amount of people from city center to suburbs every day. According to research, at about 2.2 millions passengers went through this road from March 2010 to March 2011, which is just over 3% of all public transport trips in the region. This amount is predicted to increase by 30%. So that, if at the present time buses carry at about 10000 passengers per week’s day, in 2041 the number of daily public trips is going to be at approximately 13000. (Auckland Transport, 2014). Refer to traffic observations, there are already more people in buses than in cars during the busiest morning time, from 7am to 9 am, with at about 1100 and 800 passengers respectively. Those numbers of users are also expected to increase in the nearest future. As well as this, there are four pedestrian crossings with traffic lights. There are 50 side roads and three village centers (Mt. Eden, Mt. Roskill, Balmoral) on Dominion road. Problem statement The problem is that there ... ... middle of paper ... ...in Paddington Green the way for cyclist will be laid on a boardwalk to protect tree’s roots. Conclusion In conclusion, Dominion road is a really vital project for all Auckland’s transport system. Once this project is done, there will be a lot of benefits to all cyclists, pedestrians, cars and buses as well. The process in this project is quite complicated as you have to consider a lot of factors such as, benefits should over weight the expenses and how to go over some technical challenges with less time and low cost. Throughout the book Tom Lewis goes back and forth between the good and bad that came about from building highways. While the paved roads connected our country, made travel time faster, provided recreation, and pushed the development of automobiles they also created more congestion and travel time, divided communities, and made us slaves to automobiles. The author is critical of the highways, but he does realize the great achievement it is in the building of America. Lewis said, “As much as we might dislike them, we cannot escape the fact that ...

As seen, I drew only Highway 99 and the two rivers as physical markings on the map. I did that to approximately orient the viewer and also show that even physical boundaries were not constant boundaries for the school lines. I did not draw out the roads on this map for two reasons. One: our school district covers a large amount of space and drawing the streets out would have made the boundary lines look very muddled and made it difficult to see any other markings on the map. Two: the streets did not make a significant difference in how the boundary lines were drawn if you look at the map logically. For example, the border between Davis and Gregori is drawn by streets, but it is not one singular street, they zigzag along several housing developments that are fairly new. None of them wanted to go to a “ghetto” high

The project is called “Paths To Progress.” Paths to progress is an improvement program for transportation, in efforts to restore and further improve the quality of of more than 60 road way segments in New Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. The project is a collaborative result between a few organizations. including: The Federal Highway administration, New Orleans Regional Planning Commission, Louisiana Department of Transportation, and the City of New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina and Rita damaged many roadways that were already in the process of being repaired. The roadways are major routes that will benefit residents, business owners and tourists as well. The improvements will include pavement resurfacing, patching, repairing curbs and building ADA- compliant accessible ramps. The organization really wants to emphasize that this project will make transportation easier, and minimize inconvenience (Paving LA Roads 2014). Paths to Progress has a website that shows their progress, news, updates and how the community can get
This essay focuses upon evidence gathered from people who provide good examples of ‘making and remaking’ on City Road in relation to connections and disconnections. Evaluations are drawn from the relevant Open University reading and visual resources and the essay is revised following ‘TMA 01 feedback’ (TMA FORM PT3e: TMA No 01, 2016).
Throughout its nearly 60 year history, the Interstate Highway System has served the United States of America far beyond its original goals. From its original purposes of uniting the country and aiding defense to the more mundane, (but equally important)such as ferrying goods across the country, the Interstate Highway System has firmly entrenched itself as one of the greatest feats of engineering the world has ever known. Record setting bridges, tunnels, and length of pavement have all been made by the vast expanse of the IHS FACT. As Dwight D. Eisenhower, then president, stated “Together, the united forces of our communication and transportation systems are dynamic elements in the very name we bear -- United States. Without them, we would be a mere alliance of many separate parts” (http://todayinsci.com/Events/Transport/HighwayInterstate-Quotations.htm 22 Feb 1955)
Following the civil war, railroad construction took off at a fast pace. In the twenty-five years between 1865 and 1890, the miles of railroad track in the United States went from 35,000 to 200,000. The enormous increase in track produced an increase in America's economy.
In carrying out it remit, it faces a number of key challenges, not least is the safety programme. Excellent progress has been made on upgrading the national road network in recent years, but much of the unimproved network remains congested, sub-standard and unsafe.
A project is a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product or service. They are goal oriented, have a definite start and finish time, must be done within cost, schedule and quality parameters. Projects involve the coordinated undertaking of interrelated activities (Project Management: Achieving Competitive Advantage). According to Tom Peters, “Projects, rather than repetitive tasks, are now the basis for most value-added in business”. Based on this, it is clear that projects are of utmost importance to businesses in both the service and the manufacturing industries.

Dombivli being busiest stations on centre line, the Manpada road attracts huge traffic. Kalyan, Dombivli are developed as residential hub of MMR. The area is mainly developed as the job feeder for capital city of Mumbai. Due to major job opportunities but lack of affordable housing in Mumbai, people have shifted away from island city for affordable and better standard of living. Manpada road also serves as link between Navi Mumbai and KDMC. Navi Mumbai being newly developed, it also attracts heavy traffic. Thus adding to its importance.Selection of the most appropriate mass transit mode can be difficult to all those who are interested in a new medium to high-capacity transit system for their city and want to manage the investment and maintenance costs of their new public mass transit system. Buses are the backbone of the public transport system for many cities, and will remain so, for the foreseeable future. A positive reallocation of road space from cars to buses will assist operations and will capitalise on the efficiency of buses in using that road space, but even this option is not available in this case. So instead of growing horizontally, we should focus on growing vertically. The ropeways are ideal in special situations just like
The scenarios that will be explored in this report are: driving down Newnham Rd, driving across Broadwater Rd and driving onto Broadwater Rd from Newnham Rd.
Most people take the urban public transportation system for granted. It is used in every aspect of our daily lives: work, education, medical necessities, recreation, etc. It is also important for the transportation of goods and services, which aids the growth and maintenance of our economy. Urban public transportation is the critical component of our quality of life and economic stability. The MBTA, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, is Boston and Eastern Massachusetts’s major transportation service. The MBTA has played a central role in the development of Boston and surrounding cities and towns for more than a century; providing service from 175 cities and towns into Boston. On an average weekday over 1.2 million trips are made on the subway, buses, commuter lines and other services in the mass transit system. With an international airport, a ship port, the highways, and the rail lines to connect regional cities and towns to national and international destinations and markets, Boston’s urban public transportation system has made the region’s growing role in the global economy possible.
The development of every nation hinges on the effectiveness of their transportation systems. Movement of goods, services and people to and from locations is made possible by transportation systems. The importance of effective transportation systems cannot be over-emphasized. Many countries face transportation problems and my country Ghana is no exception. A trip of about 30 minutes usually takes about an hour or more due to traffic jams. This is seriously impacting productivity and has become a topical issue in the country. The situation is the same in Uganda where I currently work. To this end, Transportation Engineers are needed to design roads/ highways that will stand the test of time, plan effective traffic management systems to reduce
