I was exposed to the world of physical therapy ever since I was 16 years old. After years of observing various aspects that supplement the occupation, it is definitely safe to say that professionalism is a crucial element in being a student in a doctor of physical therapy program. I have seen many qualities through physical therapists in which professionalism stood out to me. First of all, a great principle manifested is altruism, which is the practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others. If anyone were to ask me what first sparked my enthusiastic interest to study physical therapy, it would simply be due to the acts of altruism that encircle the field. Physical therapists have enlightened me that it is acceptable to be closer to patients on a personal level in which they are comfortable and can open up about anything. When I spent time observing, every physical therapist executed strong benevolence towards their patients, reaching to them on an emotional and personal level. The positive atmosphere only further assisted in achieving a stable, healthy recovery. Whether I am a student in school or a working professional, the world of physical therapy will have its hardships and struggles, but the hard work will lead to significant rewards that other occupations cannot offer. Observing physical therapy opened my eyes to many qualities of professionalism that shaped me to who I am today. Throughout my 221 hours of observation, physical therapists profoundly displayed professionalism through acts of altruism, flexibility, expansion of knowledge, communication, and compassion.
