As educators, we never stop learning new approaches on how to teach our students and lead them to success. This week’s learning resources emphasized the need for collaborative forms of professional development and increase professional growth. The insights that I gained with the Learning Resources this week were very helpful for my professional growth. For instance, I learned about the many roles that a teacher leader must execute in the school and the benefits of collaboration among teachers. According to Knight (2008), each role requires a specific set of knowledge and skills with a distinctive set of challenges that meet a specific teacher need. I am an individual that encountered many problems as a novice teacher and nobody helped me with school procedures or teacher expectations. I still remember when I started teaching, I did not have a mentor nor a curriculum for the class; therefore, I did face many challenges with my students and I learned the hard way. I want to help these teachers with my effective strategies and resources that I utilized in my classroom. The lessons from personal experiences related to collaboration among teachers in my school are being very helpful in my professional career. Collaborating with administrators and colleagues helped me acquire new skills that promoted my professional growth. A lesson from personal experience on collaboration that is emphasized in this assignment, happened two years ago. I helped a new teacher implement new strategies to motivate his students to learn. The new teacher was been having issues with his students not listening and not putting an effort to learn; therefore, I decided to help him as a mentor, since I had more experience handling this type of issues. Growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood as a kid sanctioned me to perpetually become aware that I was different from my neighbors. Through some social interactions with my friends in elementary schools, I quickly descried that my appearances, such as my hair, eyes, and nose was different from my peers. Professional development is critical to success in a teacher’s career. Teachers need to be open to continuing their education and consistently reflecting on lessons and interactions with students. At the expert stage of teaching, “the teacher’s practice is characterized by fluency, automaticity, and efficiency” (Garmston, 1998). In order to achieve this level of teaching practice, the educator must continue to learn new teaching strategies, understand the curriculum, recognize students and their differences, and conduct self-reflections. A teacher who is dedicated to professional development and wanting to improve their teaching, will make a stronger impact on students.

I know from my prior experience within the classroom as a substitute that without some collaboration the students are at a disadvantage. One memory stands out the most when collaboration is mention is when I was subbing for a ECE Teacher in a regular learning classroom, while the teacher was giving the rest of the students their assignments I was working one on one with a ECE student that needed the extra help in order to fulfill their task. The teacher and I collaborated on the questions that the student had left to complete before moving on to their homework. Through the use of collaboration the student was able to complete their task and be on the same task as the rest of the class.

Even though principals are responsible in leading the whole school, those that have the ability to inspire their teachers to follow and share his or her vision, will make a positive impact. Interaction between leader and teacher is necessary to make positive changes. Allowing teachers to participate openly and respectfully creates trust and confidence. Teachers that trust their principals and feel are taken into consideration will work harder to meet and exceed expectations.
