The most transformative lesson I gained from this course is learning more about the process of staff development. I have been a staff nurse for most of my career; in taking this course I learned the importance of how effective management can affect the development of staff. In 2012 the Association for Nursing Professional Development (as cited in Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing 2013) states staff development is defined as a “systematic process of assessment, planning development and evaluation that enhances the performance or professional development of health care providers and their continuing competence” (Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing 2014). It is important for all nurses to continue with professional development to avoid nurses to feel overwhelmed and not continue in nursing. The nursing field is continuing to evolve; nurse shortages may still pose a threat in the future. In conclusion this course has given me the insight to continue my education and knowledge in different aspects of nursing. Leadership and management is a skill that I will continue to develop and advance my knowledge as I transition in other roles in nursing.
