When we think of a company, we usually just think of the end product; for example, we think of the iPhone and Apple, HP laptops and Hewlett Packard, and Pepsi and Pepsi Inc. As consumers, we do not take into account the process that takes place to transform raw materials into finished goods. In terms of the Apple iPhone, we don’t think of the glass screen, the battery, the charger and the hundreds of different parts that make up the phone, we just see the end result.
It is easy to lose sight of the process that Apple needs to go through to build a final product like an iPhone because as consumers, we only consume. This process of going from raw materials to the final product is known as operations management. The inputs for companies like Apple include: human labor, material and parts, energy, and the machinery and equipment needed to produce the final. In terms of the transformation process, Apple needs to consider the manufacturing and assembly required to produce its products. After the gathering of raw materials and manufacturing the final product, Apple needs to sell its products through its website, Apple stores, and third party vendors like Best Buy. The ultimate goal of any company is to have an effective transformation process that transforms raw materials into finished products that maximizes shareholder value. For the purpose of simplicity, we will focus on the transformation process of Apple and its main product; the iPhone. We will focus on the iPhone because Apple uses the same suppliers and manufacturers for its other products including the iMac, iPad, iWatch, and iPod.

Apple’s layout and design strategy is centered on its products and the consumer experience. Apple is extremely cautious in opening new stores because nearly all Apple stores are located near high-populated areas including downtown areas such as Chicago, New York and malls such as Oak Brook where foot traffic is high. Apart from the location of Apple stores, Apple has a state of the art website that helps customers customize their order and ensure that they are delivered on-time. Additionally, Apple provides its customers with customer service over the phone and even has a Genius Bar in its stores to help consumers with any problems with Apple products.
