College students have to balance work, family, and college activists and any delaying behavior from within can cause an unbalance. This behavior is called procrastinating and it can lead to problems in many areas of a student’s life. College students are the worst hit by this type of behavior because they have many different activities to focus on instead of studying. These activities can cause students to study when they have time which often is usually too short amount of time. There is a time and place to relax and enjoy life, but if students focus on playing around instead of getting their assignments done, college life will be stressful.
Procrastination is when people put other tasks, like clubbing with friends, ahead of completing the project assigned. There are seven categories of procrastination listed by Hoffman and Julie within Stop Procrastinating Now! 10 simple & Successful Steps for Student Success which students may fall within. The first is the “perfectionist procrastinator” where students usually get the project done ahead of time but because of wanting the project to be perfect they turn it in late. The second type is the “relax, it can wait procrastinator” which are students who think they have enough time so they focus on other activates. The problem is that students misjudge how long to wait and end up handing their projects in late. The third is the “fantasizer procrastinator” which are students who think about how their project fits into the big picture. These students turn their project in late because of “ambitious (although unrealistic) dreams pertaining to his goals and thus seldom is able to begin the project” (Hoffman and Julie, 19). ...rs tend to overestimate the degree of unpleasantness of a task” (Lay, 46). Procrastination is a problem that when left unchecked can cause serious problems in every aspect of a person’s life. The solution for students can be as easy as sticking to a goal or as hard as denying themselves a prize when they missed the deadline on a project. The type of solution a person uses depends on what works best for that student, but a schedule to help stay goal positioned never hurt.

In college, just about all students procrastinate in some type of way. They do not realize that they need to stay ahead of their work and stay caught up. Students do not realize that procrastination can become a habit and it can ruin a person’s life. They also do not realize that procrastination can be a burden on them. Procrastination can break students in college. Students in college may struggle because of procrastination.
Procrastination is a concept that is very relatable and real that if you ask anyone in the world whether they’ve ever procrastinated in their life, undeniably their answer will be yes. It’s been dubbed as normal and has been accepted by several procrastinators as a part of their life. Per the Merriam-Webster dictionary normal is defined as “conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern” (Merriam-Webster 2017). As a high school/early college student there shouldn’t be any room for procrastination because of the many seminars that talk about time management and accepting responsibility and pride for your work. I procrastinate daily. It’s become a natural part of my life that my schedule is now based around doing my work on the last possible day that it’s due. I might procrastinate the entire week but I can never relax because in the back of my mind I know that I have work to complete. Procrastination is a form of relief if several tasks are piling up, but in the long run procrastinating is only putting off the inevitable that will end up as a poor job.
“Active procrastinators are people who make intentional decisions to procrastinate,” (Choi & Morgan) this type of procrastinator is often satisfied with his or her work after it is completed. On the other hand, these procrastinators may well not escape the dangers and costs of academic procrastination regardless of their knowledgeable decision to delay said work, which may possibly range from negative outcomes in tests to drop outs; with wasted time, impaired progress, missed deadlines, missed openings and poor grades falling in between. Academic performance is often greatly affected by procrastination, for instance, Phycology Professors at Florida State University, Dianne Tice and Roy Baumeister propose that if one starts the assignment late, even if the one believes he might have enough time, the procrastinators’ performance will worsen, either because of unexpected complications or by one of the various obstructions that occur on a day-to-day basis. One thing frequently leads to another, with a poor quality assignment, one may envision lower grades, staying behind the rest of the class and a lower GPA, which might affect ones’ opportunities later on. “I need to stop procrastinating, I’ll start tomorrow!” Most of us have uttered these words at least once in our academic life, if not daily. Procrastination is habitual, it is gauged that 95% of college students in America procrastinate, 50% of which who claim to do it half the time and 38% who do it on occasion (koestner, Senecal, & Vallerand, 1995). Procrastination can be defined as prolonging a task and/or delaying it for periods of time knowing it’s in need of attention. Negative implications associated with this can include a decline in quality work and overall learning experience, with an increase in stressful urgency (Goroshit & Hen, 2014). The typical college course requires the successful completion of challenging assignments, such as exams, term papers, and presentations. With deadlines looming for these assignments, some students will begin their work right away, while others will wait until the last minute to get started. One of the reasons of why I chose this theme because is something that no one will be more interested than a procrastinator. Being a procrastinator myself, I’m always making excuses to not work or even to study. Another reason is that of many people think that procrastination is the same as laziness. Understanding the difference between these two themes is very hard because many people don’t know the importance of knowing how procrastination starts. This happens with me because of confusion or misunderstanding. Some students who are less motivated will procrastinate until the last minute. For example: they procrastinate on studying for exams, group projects, or writing academic papers. I know that when I procrastinate a lot, I will just turn in whatever I have because I don't want to fail the class. Erica Gordon (2016) stated that people do this because of “fear of success, feelings of self-doubt, lack of self-esteem.”
Internal discomfort can be from irritation, nervousness, anxiety, or regret. There is also external discomfort such as failure in academics, the loss of opportunities, stress in relationships, or increase of health risks (Rabin et al., 2011). The difference between procrastinators and non-procrastinators is that one group of students are more goal-oriented than another. College students who delay completing tasks also do not make use of internal and external signals to control when to start, maintain, and end goal-directed actions (Rabin et al., 2011). There are many ways to minimize the effects of procrastination among these individuals. Some believe that procrastinating will cause a great decline in the cognitive process and bring great disarray to the student’s assignments and projects, yet that is not true; it is the complete opposite. Procrastinating will help generate greater learning environments, and will allow you to pass the class. Your learning will improve in the sense, as you will begin to develop better skills; and in the meanwhile, you’ll have more time to do the activities which are fun. Some good ways to procrastinate include creating a schedule, and then clearing it. Furthermore, by doing this you will begin to see that your schedule is free, and this will take your mind off your work. Once you set your mind to it, the procrastinating will become the easiest part. The urge to complete the assignment will be crawling behind your ear, yet over time you will learn to ignore this voice. Staying up late and doing your assignment is better for you, and your grade, as you are more awake and understanding of your surroundings, and overall you are the one in control of your thoughts; and not your sleep deprived self. The first level of school hell is comprised of the procrastinators, the students who delay their work until the very day it is due and give study guides a cursory glance before the test. These students feel the constant anxiety of a long-term project’s due date approaching.
As an adult student, it is not easy to manage the demands of work; spouse and children; and the need to set aside time to read, research, write, and complete specified assignments. The biggest complaint conveyed by adult students is that they simply don’t have enough time. The fact is time management is crucial so you don’t lose sight of your goals. Students’ time is a limited resource. Like other limited resources, time can be more or less effectively managed (Britton, 1991, p.405). It is hard to address my perspective of my own procrastination and my ability to learn. Now that I’m older and looking at the facts of where I am now in life, I should be a lot further in my college goals. Many young adults wish someone sat them down early in life and guided them in a wiser direction. A college degree is essential in the career world.
The definition of procrastination according to Solomon & Rothblum is the determined delay of the start or completion of a task (1984). Procrastinators will also differ from those who do not procrastinate in numerous ways. An example would be that procrastinators often fear failure, strive for perfection, may be slightly pessimistic and more anxious, which may become worse when they realize they are procrastinating (McCown & Johnson, 1991) or when deadlines are approaching (Tice & Baumeister, 1997). The personal and realistic problems that result from dysfunctional procrastination are predominantly acute in academics, as the inclination to put off school-related tasks often result in challenging levels of stress (Solomon & Rothblum 1984), on the whole the end of the academic semester would be the peak (Tice & Baumeister, 1997).
Procrastination is a tendency to postpone, put off, delay, reschedule, take a rain check on, put on ice, hold off, or to defer what is necessary to reach a particular goal.(Roget's 21st Century Thesaurus, Third Edition. Philip Lief Group 2009.) While attending College some students find it hard to juggle work, family, and friends. Leading most students down a dangerous path to procrastination; that negative impact affect students from their physical health, mental health, and social health.
People all procrastinate at one time or another. Procrastination is the practice of delaying work on important tasks in favor of less challenging ones. Chronic procrastinating hinders productivity and affects our state of mind by creating anxiety and stress (Reichelt). As deadlines approach, one often feels frustration and guilt for not starting on a task earlier. We often assume that projects won't take as long to finish as they really will, which often results in a mad scramble to finish the project in the twenty-four hours before the projects deadline. One of the biggest factors contributing to procrastination is the misconception that we need to be inspired or in the mood to work on the task at hand (Reichelt). However, the reality is that if you wait for the “right time” you will most likely wait for an indefinite amount of time and the task will never get completed.
