Introduction:
“Fermentation occurs in fruits, bacteria, yeasts, fungi, as well as in mammalian muscle”(Biology Online, 2008, p. xx-xx) . “Yeasts were discovered to have connection with fermentation as observed by the French chemist, Louis Pasteur” (Biology Online, 2008, p. xx-xx). “Pasteur originally defined fermentation as respiration without air” (Biology Online, 2008, p. xx-xx). “However, fermentation does not have to always occur in anaerobic condition” (Biology Online, 2008, p. xx-xx). “Yeasts still prefer to undergo fermentation to process organic compounds and generate ATP even in the presence of oxygen” (Biology Online, 2008, p. xx-xx). “However, in mammalian muscles, they turn from oxidative phosphorylation (of cellular respiration) to fermentation when oxygen supply becomes limited, especially during a strenuous activity such as intensive exercising” (Biology Online, 2008, p. xx-xx).
Fermentation is one of the process of glycolysis, it is anaerobic, basically this means that it does not use air. Its end product is ethanol, which is a form of alcohol, ethanol differs from alcohol in its chemical composition. The end product of ethanol from glycolysis can be explained by the following equation.
“C2 H12 O6 → 2CO2 +2C2 H5 OH+2ATP” (Slide Share, n.d., p. xx-xx).
The reactant is glucose and the finished product is ethanol.
“Photosynthesis (literally, “synthesis from light”) is a metabolic process by which the energy of sunlight is captured and used to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) into carbohydrates (which is represented as a six-carbon sugar, C6H12O6) and oxygen gas (O2)” (BioPortal, n.d., p. 190).
Photosynthesis in simpler turns is the ability of a live plant to carry on its chemical process by the use of light energy. Photosynthesis can not take place when there is absolutely no light, instead it stores the light it captures during the day, and uses it when needed. Photosynthesis can take place in land plants and aquarian plants such as algae. There are many factors that influence the ability of a plant to go through photosynthesis, such as light, the color of light and amount of water and or light.
This lab has two sections. The first section deals with fermentation. The purpose of the fermentation lab is to alter 5 different independent variables (temperature, acid ph, alkali ph, enzyme concentration, and substrate concentration), to learn about their effects on the ongoing process of fermentation.
The second part of this lab deals with photosynthesis. This lab has several experiments. In the first experiment students will learn about the effects that different colored test tubes have on photosynthesis in elodea sprigs.
Fermentation is the biological process which allows humans to brew beer, or any other alcoholic beverage. This process occurs in the absence of oxygen, as a means for the cell to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the source of cellular energy. Though little energy can be produced in this manner, it allows the yeast to survive in t...
Photosynthesis consists of the following equation: Sun light Carbon dioxide + Water = = == == ==> Glucose + Oxygen Chlorophyll Chlorophyll is a substance found in chloroplasts, found in the cells of leaves.
As the light is increased so would the rate of photosynthesis. Apparatus: boiling tube, 250ml beaker, bench lamp, ruler, sodium
To continue the experiment further I can use a different source of light to test the intensity of light. For the food coloring experiment, I could use a different food color such as yellow or orange to test.
The purpose of this investigation is to test the effects of multiple sugar substances on the respiration of yeast. Most people think of yeast when they think of what makes bread rise, cheese, alcoholic beverages, or other food products. Another type of yeast can also cause yeast infections, an infection of the skin. Yeasts (Saccharomyces) are tiny, microscopic organisms with a thin membrane and are usually oval or circular-shaped. They are a type of single-celled fungi of the class Ascomycetes, capable of processing sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) ; this process is known as fermentation. Fermentation and the products are the main focus points for this experiment being that cellular respiration of yeasts happens via the process of fermentation, which creates by-products of alcohol and CO2. The level of CO2 produced by the yeasts will show how effective each sugar substance is in providing cellular energy for the yeasts.
Before learning about photosynthesis, I thought this was just a way for plants to grow, not knowing the full detail that goes on inside the plant for it to grow. So, after learning about what photosynthesis is and how it truly works, it is something that is remarkable and how plants are really the only living thing that uses this process. Photosynthesis is the process of taking in carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a gas that is exhaled from animals and goes into the air and is absorbed into a plant, water (H2O) which is absorbed through the roots of a plant or known as capillary action, sunlight is absorbed through chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll or better known as the leaves of the plant. With the photosynthesis process, the plant can create a by-product known as oxygen gas which is released through the little pores into the atmosphere (Simon, Dickey, Hogan & Reece, n.d.).
The Effect of Wavelength on Photosynthesis Rate Aim: To be able to To investigate how different wavelengths (colors) of light affect the photosynthetic rate of the synthetic. I will use a pant that is a pond weed called elodea. I will measure the rate of photosynthesis by measuring the amount of o2 given off in bubbles per minute from the elodea. I will do this by placing the Elodea in a test tube with sodium hydrogen. carbonate then I will vary the light wavelength (color) using colored.
In our Biology Lab we did a laboratory experiment on fermentation, alcohol fermentation to be exact. Alcohol fermentation is a type of fermentation that produces the alcohol ethanol and CO2. In the experiment, we estimated the rate of alcohol fermentation by measuring the rate of CO2 production. Both glycolysis and fermentation consist of a series of chemical reactions, each of which is catalyzed by a specific enzyme. Two of the tables substituted some of the solution glucose for two different types of solutions.
I chose to test the effect light has on plants because it is very interesting to test that light is a very important factor, and as the earth gets hotter it will be interesting to see what will happen at the end while sunlight is important at the moment and is a core ingredient for photosynthesis, it will also be very interesting to see what would happen if the plants had no exposure to sun at all, and if they would adapt.
Although not shown in the fermentation reaction, numerous other end products are formed during the course of fermentation Simple Sugar → Ethyl Alcohol + Carbon Dioxide C6 H12 O6 → 2C H3 CH2 OH + 2CO2 The basic respiration reaction is shown below. The differences between an-aerobic fermentation and aerobic respiration can be seen in the end products. Under aerobic conditions, yeasts convert sugars to
Fermentation is an anaerobic process in which fuel molecules are broken down to create pyruvate and ATP molecules (Alberts, 1998). Both pyruvate and ATP are major energy sources used by the cell to do a variety of things. For example, ATP is used in cell division to divide the chromosomes (Alberts, 1998).
Also known as alcoholic fermentation, this process is occurs in an anaerobic environment. In alcoholic fermentation, glucose molecules are degraded into two molecules of ethanol and two molecules of carbon dioxide. In production of alcohol, first, glycolysis process will breakdown glucose molecule into to pyruvic acid. Then, carboxyl group of the pyruvic acid will be removed and causing carbon dioxide to be excreted. The NADH then left its hydrogen onto the second carbon molecule creating ethanol. The overall chemical reaction are as follows :
Photosynthesis and cellular respiration help sustain life on planet earth as both are metabolic processes in their own way. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants and other organisms use energy from the sun to form glucose from water and carbon dioxide. From there, glucose is then converted to ATP by way of cellular respiration. To convert nutrients that are biochemical energy into ATP, a process such as cellular respiration that has reactions needs to take shape in the cell of an organism, releasing waste products at the same time. For the continuous energy cycle that tolerates life on Earth as we know it Photosynthesis and Cellular respiration very essential. They have a few stages where energy and various connections occur within the eukaryotic cell. Cellular respiration takes place in the lysosome, an organelle that is found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. It uses enzymes to break down biomolecules including proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids. Photosynthesis involves the chloroplasts, which contain pigments that absorb the sunlight and then transfigure them to sugars the plant can use. Those specific processes are crucial in how far and diversified evolution has
According to scientists, photosynthesis is “the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a byproduct.” ("pho•to•syn•the•sis,")
the distance from the light source to the plant. Output - The rate of photosynthesis is to be measured by counting the bubbles of oxygen produced by the plant every two minutes, and therefore finding the rate of photosynthesis. Control - The amount of water available to the Elodea will stay the same. same level as the 400 cm3 beaker. The colour of the lamp will stay the same (yellow) as to plants Chlorophyll easily absorbs blue light.
