In the past decade there has been a decline of boy graduating from high school. In fact by 2004, 54% of the youth dropping out of high school were boys. 23% in 2005 were Hispanic, 11% were African Americans and 6 % White (Services, 2008). A decline of boys entering college; of those that do enter college they drop out or it takes them longer to finish. Questions have arisen to what is going on, why this is happening and ideas on how to fix the problems. It is suggested that one of the reasons that boys are having problems is in the classroom curriculum. The way teachers are teaching the boys and the type of material chosen is what is failing the boys. The rules in schools are tougher not allowing any leeway for any missteps should any mistakes happen, pushing boys out of schools. There are many boys that have to choose between family or school. This paper discusses the problems that are seen in today’s schools. What are the reasons that boys are failing to graduate, along with possible fixes to the systems to help the boys regain graduation rates.
There have been boys who have dropped out of school because they have been doing poorly in school. There have also been boys who have been pushed out because of behavior. This could be behavior that has gotten them suspended from school so that the student does not feel as though they need to return. Or perhaps the boy could have gotten expelled from the school and they are not welcome back. As with Michigan’s expulsions’ rules if any child is expelled from school they are not allowed to attended any public school for one year. Because young boys are more active they often are disciplined, while girls are often quieter and naturally become a teacher’s favorite. This causes problems because classrooms naturally become more attuned to a girl’s style of learning, leaving young boys behind in the classroom from an early age. “Boy Problems” by Ann Hulbert goes into detail over the increasing “gender educational disparity.” Hulbert gives the reader useful information about how and why men are falling behind and the increasing gender differences in education. Anita Garland argues in her article that American high schools are failing to motivate their students into pursuing a yearning for an education because there have been severe problems occurring in today’s generation of high school students, and the issue is a majority of students who don’t take their education as serious as they should. Several students do not have the desire of guiding themselves with useful information as they did before. In the Washington post the essay “Why Schools Are Failing Our Boys” relates to the study of the “boy problem” Fink’s concern is that boys have a harder time in school causing them to drop out or not to go on to college. I agree with Fink’s concern because of the mistreatment of genders and the pressure put on students as a whole. Based on class readings it has been illustrated that throughout history boys felt as though school made them feel less masculine. From what I have personally seen in school, boys are constantly being told to “man up”. Brooks argues that male and female brains work and experience things differently. He suggests that this theory is also the reason as to why young girls are surpassing their male counterparts in school settings. He incorrectly assumes that by separating males and females, males will be allowed to break free from gender stereotypes. Brooks strengthens his argument with results of brain research on sex differences. But, Brook’s argument is unpersuasive. American daily life is always changing. In the 1970s men dropping out of high school were still able to support their families and make a decent living. These days, dropping out of high school is practically economic suicide. In 2008 54% of high school dropouts were declared unemployed; this compared to only 13% of those with a degree (Dillon, P.1). In 2009 the average income for high school dropouts was less than half the wages earned by one with a four year college degree (Simmons P.1). In order to lower the high school drop out rates, that are negatively effecting America, the education system must consider alternative schooling methods and easier access to after school activities.
Sending a child to a gender based school, is a very big decision to make. The decision is so big, that looking at what research has to say about the topic could alter one’s decision to send their child to a gender based school. “Educators must apply different approaches in teaching make, and female students” (Gurian). This is said by Gurian, because he also believes that boys and girls learn differently. “Social pressures can be gentler and your child can learn at his own pace” (Kennedy).
It is a common phenomenon in coed schools that when an instructor asks a girl to answer a question in a science or math class, some boys always interrupt and answer that question correctly. Women, Girls, Boys and Men today face a variety of different issues in contemporary american society. Many of the problems that they face are regarding gender and cultural issues. Today we say that both genders are equal but in reality they are really not. We have both girls and both falling behind in school because of these cultural issues. According to David Brooks article titled “Honor Code,” the reason why boys especially, are falling behind in education is because of the way the education system is set-up. He states that schools today proclaim that they are diverse, but in fact they have become “homogeneous,” they only cater to students who are “nurturing, collaborative, disciplined, neat, studious, industrious and ambitious.” He says that those who do not fit in with those categories are left behind, they become disconnected and eventually withdraw completely from their education. Regrettably, some students must drop out of school and use that time to get a job to help support their families. Female students who become pregnant have to drop out to take care of their child. Poor choices constrain some students to land themselves behind bars before their education becomes complete. Primary caretakers becoming ill and/or dying can force high schoolers to drop out and to take on the role of their family member, who has now become unable (“School Dropout”). These events can leave kids all over the country with two different options that have a few stunning similarities; receiving their GED, or dropping out of high school without a
