After reading As I Lay Dying, I was unsettled by something. It wasn't the plot, although As I Lay Dying had a singularly bizarre storyline. During the action of the novel a mother dies, and her family embarks upon a disaster ridden journey in order to fulfill her last wishes. The eldest son breaks his leg, the family has to sell or mortgage practically all it's worldly goods, and Jewel risks his life twice in order to get his mother's body to Jefferson. Why has Disney not snatched up the film making rights to this singular testament to Bundren family's love and dedication? The answer, and the source of my discomfort, is that the Bundren family is awful. They are almost completely and totally defunct. The fact that there is next to no mourning following Addie's death, the most basic tribute a family can give, is only the tip of the iceberg of selfishness which seems to characterize the Bundren family.
In the Shadow of Illness, the book describes different experiences of families who have or had children with cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is an inherited disease that is passed on from the mother or father who is a carrier, but doesn’t have the condition. Doctors have figured that in this scenario, the parents are likely to have a child with CF. Individuals with CF have to take Cotazymes to help the pancreas digest food. If the person does not take these enzymes, the food goes straight through them as diarrhea. Also, the person’s lungs are affected by a thick mucus that must be removed or thinned before it clogs. Doctors recommend the patient to perform daily breathing exercises that prevent the mucus from thickening; for example, swimming
The articles “The Fruits of Ill-Health: Pesticides and Workers’ Bodies in Post-World War II California” by Linda Nash and “La Pica Tierra/The Soil Bites: Hazardous Environments and the Degeneration of Bracero Health” by Mary Mendoza relate by examining the relationships between workers and pesticide use following the second World War. Nash argues that the bodies of farmworkers and the environment are intricately linked, while Mendoza’s article focuses specifically on the discrimination of Mexican agricultural workers in the Braceros program.
Caring for a family member should never be viewed as a burden. As a caregiver, you are responsible for their safety, food preparation, administering medicine, housekeeping, emotional support, and performing personal tasks such as toileting and bathing. It would be awkward to bathe a loved one, but it is a job that must be done. You have to put your feelings aside for the well-being of your family member. If it is awkward for you, then I am sure it would be just as awkward for your family member. Would your mother or father feel embarrassed that their child is bathing them? I am certain it would not be a pleasant experience for them mostly because they were the caregivers for much of their children 's lives and probably feel helpless in this kind of situation. It is important to care for your disabled family member in a gentle, loving way. You want them to feel at ease with you just as their parental role helped nurture you in your youth. How would you deal with a difficult family member who is used to doing things their way? It is important to have a positive attitude and patience when performing tasks for your family
Everyone experiences stress, and the experience of stress is often temporary. Stress could possibly continue over a long period of time, and can be mild or intense. Stress varies between individuals, and could occur to individuals at different life stages such as childhood stress. Individuals also respond to stressors differently. Stress is circumstances in which a transaction leads an individual to perceive something inconsistent between physical or psychological difficulties in a situation. Biological factors, psychological factors, and social Factors play a role in how stress affects the body, and they all have a connection to each other. Stress can be physical, which involves bodily challenges, and psychological stress
Patient-centered variables can negatively impact perioperative care, particularly within the intraoperative and postoperative stages. Lifespan considerations, such as infants and older adults, put clients at increased risk for adverse outcomes, including perioperative hypothermia. Immature thermoregulatory functioning combined with the use of anesthesia are contributing factors for infants developing hypothermia intraoperatively, but recent studies indicate that the use of a forced-air warming system in operating rooms significantly reduces client risk (Witt, Dennhardt, Eich, Mader, Fischer, Brauer & Sumpelmann, 2013). Factors that impair thermoregulation in older adults include declining metabolic rates and decreased muscle mass (Pearson, 2015). Current perioperative nursing implications for maintaining thermoregulation in this high risk
Continuum of Care is defined as "a system that guides and tracks patients over time through a comprehensive array of health services spanning all levels and intensity of care" according to HIMSS. The local group I chose was Kentucky One Health Saint Joseph London. When I first think of that name I think of the hospital but the group offers a variety of services at different locations. Among the services offered are anywhere care, breast care; corporate health services; diabetes and nutritional care; diagnostic imaging; ear, nose and throat care; emergency care; heart and vascular care; cancer care, maternity care, neurology care, orthopedic care, pediatric care, primary care, hosptialists, lung care, sleep care, sports medicine, and surgery. The Chronic Pain Coping Inventory (CPCI) is a well-respected and commonly used test in assessing pain. People with chronic pain, like my sister Eri who has Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), should have taken this test. Pain is a common symptom for people which range from a sore throat to CRPS, it is the persistent and chronic pain that requires additional attention for coping with pain. For those who suffer from long term pain, taking medication can have long term effects so coping skills are necessary for long term management. Although my sister has taken the test, I have wondered as to the validity and reliability of these tests.
Losing a family member to cancer is like getting hit in the face with a load of bricks. Going through the process is like a never ending journey to hell, especially after the death. I am constantly reminded of the little things, pleasant and spiteful. The love in my heart for my grandmother caused me to experience the most pain in my life.- cancer is an insanely draining, vindictive, not to mention an-emotional rollercoaster.
I write to you in the most dire of circumstances unfortunately I have been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I don't know how long I have. In the last weeks i've been thinking of you and hassan. It's been a hard adjustment for Amir and I living in America few things are the same as they were. Once in America I found a job working at a gas station twelve hours a day six days a week. Once our life had become more stable I decided that we needed some other way to get money so me and Amir started working a market booth that's when I started feeling under the weather. It seemed harmless at first until I started coughing up blood. We ended up going to the hospital when they found a spot on my lung they sent me to a specialist and they told me that
Mental illness has long been perceived by the communities as a sign of weakness. Having a diagnosis of a mental illness causes patients and their family members to deal with several competing emotions, thoughts and feelings surrounding the diagnosis. This can be troubling to the family members leaving them with feelings of blame (Corrigan, Druss, & Perlick, 2014). Throughout this discussion board I will describe the benefits and barriers a family may encounter when caring for a mental health patient.
Primary caregivers are given an opportunity to take care of their loved ones; however, this job comes with a lot of stress and its consequences (Tsai, 2003). Primary caregivers take care of those with a chronic illness such as a family member or friend, are given a task that is so immense that it induces a lot of stress. In the previous decades, many research articles have developed studies which focused on stressors that were associated with the task of being the primary caregiver; yet, a theory surrounding this topic has not been developed until the early 2000s. Tsai (2003) developed the Theory of Caregiver Stress based on the Roy Adaptation Model to identify the caregiver’s response, perceptions, and adaptations to the stress and burden that primary caregiver’s experience.
Living with any type of chronic pain condition or invisible illness can be terribly isolating. Friends and family who seem understanding at first, act almost offended when you're "not better yet" over a certain time.

This identity memo about me is only a snapshot. My intent is to reflect on where I am currently and on where I am heading. Herein I will briefly focus on some of my values and how it relates to education within my family and my culture. I will also shed light on my goals and what led me to pursue this MPH degree and if there were changes along the way. Next, I will reflect on my health or family influenced my assumption of public health, and my overall assumptions about people, health, and health care utilization. Also, I will then reflect on my expectations about my performance in the program, if they were met, and what will my MPH degree do for me as it related to career and family. Finally, I am going to explain what my experiences are
