Urban sprawl has been known to have no question of its occurrence because the signs are all but hidden from plain site. These new areas of development often will spring up next to rural or undeveloped areas or by deteriorating central cities. When it comes to talking about metropolitan growth, there are three kinds of developments that follow under the umbrella of urban sprawl: leapfrog development, strip or ribbon development, and low-density single-dimensional development.
Leapfrog- Sofia Usrey
Developers will build new developments long distances away from the city often stretching past other available land. Skipping over parcels of land leaving them empty and undeveloped has coined the term “leapfrogged” development. The land further from the city is less expensive. This will usually lead to compact commercial development that bring in retail stores offices, and businesses. The land that has been skipped over is like a magnet for developers because of the increased movement through the space. Leapfrog development needs stimulate development in up and coming areas.
These developments, bring money into the area, but also bring additional cost. The congestion creates stress on the road systems through the enormous amount of traffic. For this model to be cost effective, outlying developments must pay the full cost of the infrastructure. Currently, local government is responsible for the cost of roads. However if the residents of the new leapfrog developments contribute money, they will help stimulate commercial development in their area and nearby bordering urban areas.

A great example of implementation of public transportation are the light rails that run through the Dallas and Fort Worth regions. Annually more than two million people ride the rails as a means of transportation from the outer city into the central business area, these numbers greatly reduce the amount of cars on the road, not only benefiting the citizens but also the environment. Other means of public transportation should also be implemented so that citizens are giving a wider range of choices, this also allows the dispersion of people so that not every person is crowded on the light rail or bus. Urban sprawl has resulted in the interdependence of people with the automobile, however if designers are mindful of the effects which urban sprawl has caused, these effects can be easily remedied.
