Plagiarism has become a serious problem throughout colleges, especially in the past years. According to Dictionary.com, “plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.” There are various ways that lead a person into plagiarizing, sometimes without even knowing. However, that is no excuse. When doing any type of work that requires quotations or cited sources it is important to know the work you are citing so that you do not plagiarize. Today, students have the ability to jump online and take hold of someone else’s work, because they are either too lazy or deal with procrastination. However, plagiarism is a serious academic offense. Plagiarism is easy to discern, however, there are ways to prevent cases.

Plagiarism is continually on the rise. This is a serious offense that is occurring in the University. Palm Beach Atlantic University's view and stance is very strong against Plagiarism. According to the Introduction to Mass Media syllabus by Dr. Wainer, “Academic integrity” is a factor of the “five core community values at Palm Beach Atlantic University.” For a student at the University, it is crucial that plagiarism is well defined and understood, especially before reaching upper level courses. Often, students do not even know they have plagiarized material. This is because of the various types and levels of plagiarism. According to duplichecker.com, there are three levels of intensity of plagiarism. They are known as “minimal, substantial and complete” plagiarism.
