College is a privilege that is earned by hard-working, deserving students who choose to further their education. Students struggle through hours taking tests such as the SAT and the ACT in hopes he or she gets into the college of his or her dreams. Students who are dedicated to getting good grades, volunteering, and being good citizens have to spend thousands of dollars each year to pay for their education. Students have to worry about being in debt for most of their life just to pay off their tuition for earning a degree. Inmates in prison should not have the opportunity to earn a completely free college degree. Full scholarships are hardly given, but when they are, they are given only to deserving students. Breaking the law and committing a crime does not make someone deserving of a free college education. Inmates in jail should not
Depending on the severity of the crime, most inmates will not even be able to get a job that will use the degree they received. If an inmate can actually use the degree, some will simply choose not to because they are lazy and go back to their old, bad habits they had before jail. Most drug users will most likely relapse and end up right back in jail. When people fill an application for any job, one of the questions is if one has been convicted of any crimes. If one says yes, he or she has to explain what the crime was, when they did it and how long he or she served in jail. People who have a record do not get the same consideration for a job as people without a record. People who have never been convicted of a crime are considered more of a prospect than people who had once been convicted of a crime, such as breaking and entering or vandalism. There is no point in giving a free college education to an undeserving criminal because the chances of that criminal getting a job and putting that degree to use are very
