Goals are crucial to our lives. They help us understand the direction we should go on and what we should avoid, but if we never think about our goals we can never achieve success.
Some of the material in this chapter will be theoretic like Law of Attraction and Parkinson’s Law. The principles follow what many have devised as being the most efficient ways to achieve goals. There are a couple of arguments that have been made that those theories don’t work as well as many have said. The choice is yours to decide which theories to use and which ones to disregard. Everyone is different and therefore what might work for some won’t work for others.
Goal Setting Theory
Two researchers, Dr Edwin Locke and Dr. Gary Latham spent years researching goals and

Set deadlines for when you want to achieve each goal. Give yourself enough pressure to fulfill those goals.
If you start to feel stressed then it is a clue that the goals you set might be too unrealistic. Reassess your goals and make them simpler.
Break large and complex goals into sub-goals. This will stop you from being overwhelmed and will motivate you into achieving the goals.
Six Golden Rules to Goal Setting
These golden rules will point you in the right direction. The reasons why some goals don’t work is because they don’t follow the six golden rules.
Goals must motivate you
Goals must motivate you, they must convince you to follow through with them. They must keep you up at night and you must strive to want to achieve them. Write down your why for wanting to achieve this goal. Set goals that are a priority to you, you don’t want to set too many goals that you won’t be able to achieve.
The goal must align with what you want to have in the end. It must thrill you and if it doesn’t you won’t follow through. Think of the end in mind and the goals must all link up together. That way you aren’t overwhelmed.
Set SMART
Everyone's goals and desires are different. One person's idea of happiness will be a lot different than another's. I have found the best approach to setting goals is the simple approach. Break it down into categories and then expound on each one. Do some brainstorming
As the quote given by William Shakespeare “Dream in light years, challenge each mile and walk step by step” which indicates don’t be afraid of ambition, break down each challenge and set new goals and
"Achievement was all very well, but it was the process, not the goal, that was most important" (Sotomayor 92) – I live among these lines. You learn more over the process of your goal than the goal itself.
By using the S.M.A.R.T. goal system, you are able to make your dreams a reality, one small step at a time. The first step in reaching a long-term goal is to understand the S.M.A.R.T. the goal process. Simply using the words specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound can be a bit confusing. After a bit of research, I was able to better define the method. Using a S.M.A.R.T. Goal worksheet provided by Tatt (2012).
Setting goals is like looking at a map for it shows you where you want to go. If a person
Goals give you something to measure yourself against and give you direction. Currently, my main goal is to graduate from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree of science in engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering. My anticipated time to graduation is five years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Beyond getting my bachelor’s degree at East Carolina University, I would like to go to medical school and become a doctor focusing on prosthetics. In order to make my goals a reality, I will have to work diligently to remain on track throughout my schooling. Additional goals that I have set for myself are to complete homework assignments by the time they are due, reading assigned material before it is discussed in class, doing well in each of my courses this semester, successfully participating in extracurricular activities, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, getting a position as an engineer, and becoming a leader within both the engineering community and the general community. A world-class engineering student woul...
It is more than just setting a goal and hoping that you can achieve it. Having a growth mindset is important in this situation. In the book “Mindset” it says ”People with a growth mindset, however, believe something very different. For them, even geniuses have to work hard for their achievements.” Think of any intelligent person that was successful, they had to work for it.
One of the best ways to follow a successful path is to set goals for yourself. They are important to keep yourself on task and to get to a desired point of self fulfillment. The issue can be how to achieve goals in a successful manner. The issue is "Although people may desire or intend to attain some outcome, they are not committed to that as a goal until they are willing to invest affect, cognition, and behavior in attaining it" (Traci Mann, 2013). This is why it is important to have a set path on how to accomplish important goals. I have chosen three goals that I want to accomplish to demonstrate a Process known as SMART, to help accomplish them. There goals are that I want to finally earn a college degree(personal), I want to make it into the honor society while earning my degree(academic), and I want to earn my degree in order to contribute to Autism research(professional). All of these goals range in the amount of time it will take to accomplish them. Some are long term, but I can still use the SMART goal process in order to achieve them. The SMART steps to follow are:
Setting goals is the most important thing you can do in your life. Without goal's you are going to have no direction, no ambition to be successful, no drive to stay in school, and trouble finding a career that will provide for you. Without these three things, achieving your goals is going to be one of the toughest tasks in the years to come.
When you have your goals more goals you are unclear has no dates to be performed and even strategies, so that only a distant dream to be realized. First put all your professional and personal goals on paper, after that determine a date for meeting them, now write what you have to do to accomplish your goals and let very clear to you, then get into action when you reach the end each week make an overview how much you contributed this week to reach your goal. From this you get to live the present begins to act in the present moment, in the now. When you live now then begin to realize that the past has no interference with their targets in their goals, because what really matters is not what you've done but rather you are doing this to give you reason for you to be happy in your professional and personal life. (Janssen,P & De Jonge, J & Bakker, A, 2003), states that the goal setting theory is the most supported theory within motivation. The theory developed by (Locke, 1968) states that the basic premise of goal theory is that objectives play an important part in determining behavior.
Goal setting is key in motivation; goals need to be clear, sharp, and realistic. To make these feel more achievable it is better to break these down into smaller medium-term goals and medium-term goals into short-term goals so that you have a clear connection between what one does every day and their long-term goals.
In setting a goal, you set up a grand goal and then you break it down into smaller goals. This helps you to further monitor your progress on a smaller scale and helps you stay motivated and focused because each time you achieve one of the smaller goals, it keeps you inspired to achieve the grand goal. Set goals that are definite with a well-known target to achieve, always giving yourself a specific time-stamped to achieve your goals. However, ensure that your goals and time lines set are realistic otherwise you will end frustrated chasing castles in the
It requires steady attention to our actions and determination for wanting to achieve something big. In order to achieve your goal in life, you need to deeply desire the goal that you want. Weak desires bring weak results. You need to have the strong desire to achieve the goal. You have to decide what you want. Start to think about what these goals means to you. Take time to think why you are setting the goal you have chosen. Make sure that you really want the goal you are setting to avoid
Growing up, goals change dramatically. A five-year olds goal is to get the coloring page done. As people go through school, goals obviously change. A freshman’s goal may be to learn the school so he or she doesn’t get lost. Senior’s goals grow to finding where they will spend the next four years or what kind of career they will grow upon. Then, of course goals continue to change as people get older and enter into different stages of life. In this essay, I am going to talk about how my goals in different aspects of my life and how they have transformed, what they are currently, and what they may turn into in the future.
