Imagine being a princess, but not the regular type of princess you might think of, not a princess dressed in pink with servants waiting on you. Imagine being the type of princess who has a lot of responsibilities and a husband who doesn’t love you. This type of princess had to keep up an appearance that did not portray her real self. She had a country, Wales, to look take care of and she also visited the poor. Eventually she became known as the people’s princess dedicated to helping others. This princess could only be the charismatic Princess Diana. Diana was very influential during her short life, even though she had a rough childhood, and a difficult marriage. She loved to help the needy and to do charity work. When she was killed, the world was devastated, because they had lost one of the most influential women in the world. A close look at Princess Diana’s life reveals that princesses do not have perfect lives. At first, Princess Diana had a wonderful childhood, but things changed when her parents divorced and her new stepmom moved in. Everything was perfectly ready at Park House near Sandringham, Norfolk. Blue baby clothes had been laid out on blue sheets which matched the blue walls. The Spencer family had been expecting a boy, but they were wrong. On July 1, 1961, a baby girl was born. The new baby had to wait a week before being named Diana Frances Spencer. Diana’s mother, Frances, was probably the most influential person in Diana’s early life. She was always there for Diana and she provided a fun childhood. Her mother influenced Diana’s wish to marry for love, and for true love only. A princess image is very specific and made clear through the descriptions of each princess. Every princess had long hair and all ware extravagant dresses. The princesses wore make-up, jewelry, and some type of head piece. They made sure the princess image was always clean and fashionable. The majority of the time for the princesses was spent interacting with animals, singing, or dancing and cooking, cleaning, serving, and grooming. I never saw a princess working or fighting. These unreal expectations to fulfill were unattainable. Growing up I thought that these princesses represent the social norm, but found out how unrealistic they were when I got older. Most princess stories follow the pattern of marrying her prince charming and then they have it all. Jasmine, Ariel, and Snow White were already princesses at the start of the movies. They really didn 't have anywhere to go, but they were able to achieve even more happiness by marrying the man of their dreams. Aurora and Rapunzel were also princesses from the start of the movie, but they didn 't know it. So, they lived modest lives and received their true inheritance at the end of the stories. Princess Diana was born The Honorable Diana Frances Spencer on July 1, 1961. She was the third female child to Viscount and Viscountess Althorp. Diana had two older sisters, Sarah and Jane and one younger brother, Charles. Her family was well off and Diana had a privileged childhood. The Spencer’s made their money as successful sheep traders in the 15th century. With their fortune they built Althorp House in Northamptonshire and acquired a family crest and motto – "God defend the right" (Morton 10). The Spencer’s occupied various offices of State and Court. When Diana’s was born her father was disappointed she was a girl. He was hoping for his third children to finally be a male heir to carry on the Spencer name. Diana’s father and the rest of the family wanted to know why her mother was only producing girls. Because of this, her mother was sent to a clinic for tests (Morton 10). She was only 23 at the time. This is ironic because today we now know the sex of the baby is determined by the father. Even though she was too young to understand, Diana believed she was to blame for her father’s disappointment. Finally, a few years later her mother delivered a boy to carry on the Spencer name. Although Diana had a beautiful christening at Sandringham Church with well-to-do Godparents, her brother Charles’s christening was a major event at Westminster Abbey. Buying her princess toys, surrounding her with pink, and watching the Disney movies about how princesses are beautiful, always gets her prince charming, and lives an enchanted life for ever after, is a dangerous “reality” to create for young girls. Eventually, while growing up from child years to young adults, girls in this type of environment can develop a gender constructed identity that, they are superior and deserve an enchanted life. It’s a dangerous reality for these young girls because they will grow up to believe that, they’re entitled to the fairy tale life, having pure beauty , marry her dream man, conceive beautiful children and live happily ever after, but sometimes life is not a fairy tale and you don’t always end up getting what you want.
