When considering the connotation of pride and whether it is a good or bad characteristic it is important to consider the definition applied. Pride, according to the Oxford Press Dictionary, is defined as “a feeling of pleasure or satisfaction that you get when you or people who are connected with you have done something well or own something that other people admire.” While this definition does not insinuate a faulty or sinful perception, and a healthy measure of pride is acceptable, there is a line of demarcation that cannot be crossed. Pride has become a customary and unquestioned value that has been ingrained in culture because society the structure and precepts of God have been removed from the worldview. Pride has evolved beyond a beneficial characteristic and, for some, has morphed from an acceptable satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, to an unreasonable desire or love of one 's own excellence. It is misconceived that if we follow Jesus we surrender happiness. Pride, together with the other sins are all extremely damaged and defective substitutes for the truth, goodness and beauty of God. Pride puts us in opposition to God, and humility allows us to depend on God and receive His grace. The Apostle Peter teaches this when He says in 1 Peter 5:5 “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” He also goes on to say in verse 6 “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:” C. S. Lewis stated the distinction memorably: “Humility is not thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less.” and went on to say “In other words, humility is fundamentally a form of self-forgetfulness as opposed to pride’s
