The Price of Homelessness
Most people find it hard to believe that there is a homeless problem in a town as small as ours, but unfortunately it is a fact. Some people think that if they can’t see the problem, that it doesn’t exist. Some of our citizens willfully turn a blind eye on the subject of local homelessness, claiming that it couldn’t happen here. But as a Dewitt citizen and a former homeless teenager, I mean it when I say we have a homeless problem. The rising amount of homeless persons in Dewitt, Iowa, and surrounding counties is rapidly increasing, and our resources are rapidly depleting, but there are steps that we can take to try and stop these tragedies. The ever-increasing homeless problem in DeWitt and this region can be lowered by offering available shelter, extending more funding to local food pantries, and having more mental health services available. …show more content…

People that are living in poverty are more likely to have little to no income, which leads to a lot of people living and working on the streets. As of 2015, the percentage of families that are living in poverty in Iowa is 12.2%. The child poverty rate alone is 14.9% (Talkpoverty). What does it mean to be living in poverty? Dictionary.com defines it as: “the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor.”(Dictionary.com) This isn’t the only definition of poverty, but this is the one that pertains to this paper. Who is the face of poverty? We often think of emaciated children in rags, and people sleeping in boxes on the streets, but this is a stereotype. Sometimes stereotypes are true, but not in this situation. People who suffer in extreme poverty look like the rest of us. They don’t look dirty, and they don’t go
