Using Chapters 23, 24 and 25 Write an Analysis of the Character of
Frank Churchill
Frank Churchill is one of the dominant characters in Jane Austen’s
‘Emma’ despite the fact that he is not fully introduced until chapter
twenty-three. Each of the characters in ‘Emma’ play a role in
delivering Austen’s personal comments on the society of that time. Mr
Knightley, for example, often reflects Austen’s views of Emma’s
behaviour and expresses her own opinions on social issues and through
Emma she portrays the views of society. The purpose of Frank’s
character is to highlight Austen’s views that people should not be
judged by appearances alone and his relationship with Emma shows the
consequences of being too prejudiced to judge someone’s character
accurately.
Frank represents the ideal gentleman in Austen’s society since he is
wealthy, handsome and seems to be good natured. However Emma’s
prejudice in favour of Frank leaves her open to manipulation and
blinds her to the truth about the relationship between Frank and Jane
Fairfax. Ironically, this perfect gentleman is committing a scandal by
pressuring Jane into a secret engagement, though Emma is too blind to
be suspicious since he uses her to hide it. Frank’s relationship with
Emma reveals another purpose of Frank Churchill’s character; it raises
the issue of prejudice. In this case, Emma is prejudiced in favour of
Frank.
Emma takes deep interest in Frank both before and during his stay,
which lies in the fact that Frank is equal to her in “age, character
and condition” and because he is also the step-son of her beloved
childhood governess, Mrs Weston, therefore “ he seemed by this
connection to quite belong to her.” It is made clear that Emma has

A final way of looking at Frank is to compare him with Emma. One
could argue that Frank Churchill is the masculine version of Emma; he,
like her, enjoys using his imagination as shown when he leads her
along with the idea of Mr Dixon. Both are intelligent people and know
how to persuade others to do what they want; Emma influences Harriet
and, to an extent, Mrs Weston while Frank influences Jane Fairfax.
Another similarity between the two is their situation in life; they
are the same age and of the same wealth however Frank is confined by
his aunt in a similar way that Emma is by Mr Woodhouse. Frank himself
feels that he and Emma are very alike in character. He states “she
received my attentions with an easy, friendly, good-humoured
playfulness, which exactly suited me. We seemed to understand one
another.”
In 1845, Ebenezer Carter Tracy published a book titled, Memoir of the Life of Jeremiah Evarts. Within this book is a statement from the Cherokee people from 1830 called, “Appeal of the Cherokee Nation.” In this statement, The Cherokee Indians refuse to move west of the Mississippi River. They made this refusal for two main reasons. The Indians believed that they had a right to remain in the lands of their ancestors and they also insisted that their chances of survival would be very low if they moved west. Their survivability would be impacted by their lack of knowledge of the new lands, and by the Indians that were already living in the western lands, and who would view the Cherokee as enemies.
Many had called Ned Kelly a murderous thug, but what people say doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right. Ned was born in 1854, died at the age of 26 in 1880 and an Irish immigrant. Many have recognised Ned’s infamousness due to his action and his disgraceful family who had said to do many wrongs. Yes, Ned’s action clearly show a villain., but If you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, then you shouldn’t judge a person by his action. Ned’s mother was taken to jail for self-defence, his father died when Ned was 12-year-old further more every now and then police would accuse Ned and his family for horse thief or cattle stealing. These reason can clearly state that Ned’s a victim who played the role of villain.
“We don’t need the Nazis to destroy us. We’re destroying ourselves.” (559).These words of Mr. Frank shows many of the multifarious characteristic traits he possess. This quote shows that Mr. Frank is forgiving and has control over his own emotions. He doesn’t want any disputes in the Annex and he doesn’t lose control when angry. It also shows that he is authoritative. Mr. Frank took control of the situation in the midst of everyone arguing. One last example of a characteristic trait this quote shows is that he is intelligent. Mr. Frank understands the importance of forgiveness. He realizes that everyone is beginning to turn on each other and attempts others to forgive. For example, Mr. Frank tried to convince the others to forgive Mr. Van Daan
Julian of Norwich was raised up at St. Julian’s church and lived as an anchoress. In 1373, Julian of Norwich received a serious of visions when she was seriously sick and she would write down these visons which became known as the Shewings or Revelations of Divine Love. Julian of Norwich is the most spiritual and blessed person to live in the fourteenth through the beginning of the fifteenth century because she begs three gifts from God, she is constantly praising God for his unconditional love towards everything, and she wants other people to receive God’s grace better than she did. The three points are the most crucial beliefs to prove that Julian of Norwich was the most spiritual and blessed person to have lived in over half of the fourteenth

Since he is young, Roy Hobbs has great ability and amazing talent in baseball. However, just like a tragic hero in Greek myth, those ones who fight for their honor, but fail because of their hubris or the desire of being such immortal and an aspects of not accepting the truth and reality, Roy Hobbs' hubris, ambition and a desire for fame and his fortune really tell that he is a tragic hero.
England, under James 1st rule was a vastly altered period compared to our now modern society. So many of the values held during this time, have now been discarded and forgotten. Jane Austen grew up in the Romantic period and experienced a world which was divided, whether through education, class, status, fashion, abilities, gender and etiquette. Her novel, Pride and Prejudice is counted as one of the great classics of English Literature. Austen engrosses readers to live in her world for a time and experience a society filled with matchmaking, romance, marriage and gossip. Every one of her characters is so distinctive and has a clearly outlined caricature. Each of their diverse values conveys a different thinking of the time. Pride and Prejudice is preoccupied with the gentry and most of the social aspects which consumed these people’s lives. There were so many expectations of how you would behave in public, but of course not all of these were upheld. Elizabeth Bennet, Mr Darcy, Mrs Bennet and Charlotte Lucas are four characters which keep such strong beliefs about the social norms. These characters are expressed so descriptively and through their personalities readers can learn just how the numerous social standards were received.
The work focuses its attention on the pride and prejudices the character Elizabeth Bennet. Elizabeth’s assessment of other characters dispositions are fairly correct but her track record is still about fifty-fifty. Even though Elizabeth is correct about Lady Catherine de Bourgh and how self-righteous and condescending she is, furthermore Mr. Collins and how ridiculously self-centered he is, her first impressions of Mr. Wickham and Mr. Darcy prove to be inaccurate. Napoleon became my least favorite character in the book, Animal Farm, because he is a controlling, cold-blooded, murdering hypocrite. One way that shows Napoleon is controlling is when he uses his guard dogs to intimidate the animals into agreeing, or at least not object out loud with what he says. A quotation that shows this is “Four young porkers in the front row uttered shrill squeals of disapproval. . . the dogs sitting round Napoleon let out deep, menacing growls, and the pigs fell silent and sat down again” (Orwell 54). When Napoleon ended Sunday morning Meetings and debates, four pigs questioned and protested, but instead of listening to their thoughts, Napoleon used his guard dogs to scare them into keeping quiet. Jane Austen’s great writing talent is shown throughout her story, Pride and Prejudice. The way she develops her characters, particularly the main male characters, draws in the reader. Mr. Wickham, who first is seemed to be the perfect man, sweet charming, and respectful, is actually later in the story revealed to be selfish, self-consumed, and greedy. Mr. Bingley who is sweet, shy, and friendly learns to become more independent and confident throughout the story. Last but not least, Mr. Darcy, who is prideful, snobby, and pompous, becomes the complete opposite. Towards the end of the story the reader sees his changes: he is humbled, sensitive, and is able to show his vulnerability. Jane Austen makes her characters come alive to the reader. The way in which she shows her characters growth throughout the story is pure genius.

Within the novel, Jane Austen’s exploits of irony are shown linked throughout Emma’s notions of love and the real within her own society. Emma’s lack of education on the concepts of love is quite evident within her apathy towards Frank Churchill as her opinions are deeply rooted within her own affections, as she states, “Emma continued to entertain no doubt of her being in love. Her ideas only varied as to the how much. At first, she thought it was a good deal; and afterwards, but little. She had great pleasure in hearing Frank Churchill talked of; and for his sake, greater pleasure than ever in seeing Mr. and Mrs. Weston; she was very often thinking of him. But, on the other hand, she could not admit herself to be unhappy, nor, after the first morning, to be less disposed for employment than usual; she was still busy and cheerful; and, pleasing as he was, she could yet imagine him to have faults,” (Austen 264). Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice has emphases on how characters are perceived by the world they live in. Mr. Darcy is an unpopular and misunderstood character who is the symbol of pride throughout the novel. Mr. Wickham is a charismatic soldier who is perceptive of those around him and capitalizes on his knowledge. Throughout the novel similarities and differences between characters are highlighted. Mr. Wickham and Mr. Darcy grew up together, yet Mr. Darcy is known for having a disagreeable countenance and a large sense of pride and Mr. Wickham is more charming, charismatic, and socially well-versed. In Jane Austen’s Emma, an emphasis is placed on the importance of female friendships. In particular, Austen places a great deal of emphasis on how Emma treats the women she calls her friends. In many ways, Emma manipulates the people in her life to fit her specific expectations for them. This can be seen in her matchmaking, especially Harriet’s relationship with Mr. Martin. Emma’s manipulation of various relationships serves as a way to control the friendships she has with the women in her life. By matching her friends with the men she has chosen for them, Emma can not only elevate their status but also keep these women in her life as well. It is only when her friendships are affected by marriage that Emma re-evaluates the role of marriage in her own life.
Jane Austen’s works are characterized by their classic portrayals of love among the gentry of England. Most of Austen’s novels use the lens of romance in order to provide social commentary through both realism and irony. Austen’s first published bookThe central conflicts in both of Jane Austen’s novels Emma and Persuasion are founded on the structure of class systems and the ensuing societal differences between the gentry and the proletariat. Although Emma and Persuasion were written only a year apart, Austen’s treatment of social class systems differs greatly between the two novels, thus allowing us to trace the development of her beliefs regarding the gentry and their role in society through the analysis of Austen’s differing treatment of class systems in the Emma and Persuasion. The society depicted in Emma is based on a far more rigid social structure than that of the naval society of Persuasion, which Austen embodies through her strikingly different female protagonists, Emma Woodhouse and Anne Eliot, and their respective conflicts. In her final novel, Persuasion, Austen explores the emerging idea of a meritocracy through her portrayal of the male protagonist, Captain Wentworth. The evolution from a traditional aristocracy-based society in Emma to that of a contemporary meritocracy-based society in Persuasion embodies Austen’s own development and illustrates her subversion of almost all the social attitudes and institutions that were central to her initial novels.
