Quite possibly one of the most important purchases in the
history of The United States was the one in which Thomas
Jefferson enabled the size of the country to double. The
territory was the Louisiana Territory, the 820,000 square mile
piece of land was bought for 15 million dollars which equaled
out to about three cents an acre.
The United States originally only wanted to buy the port of
New Orleans. Thomas Jefferson wanted to buy this because there
was a risk that the half million Americans living west of the
Appalachian would secede from the Union. Purchasing the port
would keep them from seceding because they would then have a
port that they could easily use to get to the ocean. The
people in that region had been using the port until the Spanish
stopped letting them use it. This posed a serious problem
because then the only way to get goods to the ocean was over
the Appalachian Mountains, and there were few roads that
crossed the mountains. By adding the land west of the
Mississippi the United States had the potential to become a
very powerful nation.
Jefferson learned that France had just obtained the
Louisiana Territory from Spain. He proceeded to send James
Monroe and the ambassador to France, Robert Livingston to the
current leader of France Napoleon Bonapart. Napoleon needed
money for the upcoming war with Britain, realizing that he had
little hope for an empire in America any time soon he declared
that the united States could have the port if it bought the
entire territory. Jefferson quickly passed the treaty through
congress and although there doubts about the purchase on April
30, 1803 the United States doubled it’s size.
Jefferson had been planning to map out and explore the west
for two decades. Before even acquiring the land Jefferson had
been planning a small trip to explore the land he was so
captivated by. His personal library had more books on the land
than any other place. However many of the descriptions of the
land were simply made up in the minds of people that had never
been there in there lives. Maps of the land were also based on
little or no actual facts from the land. Many showed the Rocky
Mountains as smaller than the Appalachians. So in 1803
Jefferson proposed to c...

... they traveled in a way that resembles the gondolas of
Vennice italy. They would take poles that reached the river
bottom and walk from the front of the boat to the back. They
also sailed, rowed and even waded in the water and pulled the
boat. To cross mountains they put there gear on horses. They
crossed the Rockies at the Bitterroot Mountains, on a trail
used by the Shoshone.
The Corps of Discovery found several interesting geographic
features. They saw the towering falls of missouri. They also
saw the Rocky Mountains which were almost ten thousand feet
higher than the Appalachians. They also saw a high sandstone
peak that Clark named Pompy’s tower after Sacagawea’s son. In
conclusion the Lewis and Clark Expedition was a great succes,
it acheived many feats and opened the door to a new era of
american history.

“Lewis and Clark Expedition.” Compton’s Encyclopedia. 1989 ed.
Lewis and Clark Expedition, also known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, was the first American overland exploration of the American West and Pacific Northwest, departing in May, 1804 from St. Louis on the Mississippi River, making their way westward through the continental divide to the Pacific coast and ending in September 1806. The expedition was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson and guided byf Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The exploration covered a total of about about 8000 miles round trip, from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson trusted in the existence of a Northwest Passage, a water way between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The main goal of the expedition was to locate this Northwest Passage and plan its potential as a waterway for American westward expansion and commerce. Although Lewis and Clark did not find this route, the expedition succeeded in making peaceful contact with Native Americans and uncovering a wealth of knowledge about the peoples, geography, plants, and animals of the western United States. This expedition was an overwhelming amount of work in both preparations and the expedition itself and given the aftermath and achievements was not all for nothing.
The year of 1803 significantly changed our nation eternally. It stunned many people. In no way, shape or form, did we ever believe that our nation would expand so rapidly. What started with the small purchase of New Orleans led into the substantial purchase of the Louisiana Territory. This was a purchase that will make Thomas Jefferson a man to be remembered. Although, he wasn’t the only man who impacted the United States during this time period. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are the two men that are greatly known for their expedition across the Louisiana Territory. These two subjects, the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, altered our nation immeasurably.
Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark took the risk of life, limb, and liberty to bring back the precious and valuable information of the Pacific Northwest of the United States territory. Their accomplishments of surviving the trek and delivering the data to the U.S. government, have altered the course of history, but have some Historian’s and author’s stating, “It produced nothing useful.”, and having “added little to the stock of science and wealth. Lewis and Clark’s expedition is one of the most famous and most unknown adventures of America’s frontier.
The book I have just read, "In the Footsteps of Lewis and Clark", is mainly about a man named Richard, his wife Arlette, and his two children Michele, 6, and Daniel, 4, who follow in almost the exact footsteps of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. While the book talks about the family’s expedition it also, mainly, tells about the Lewis and Clark expedition and the history of it.
Lewis and Clark’s Expedition was very long and costly, although only one man lost his life. Many new things were discovered, including 178 new plants, and 122 animals. The main goal was to discover a route through to the Pacific Ocean, although Thomas Jefferson told them to note anything important what so ever. It was even noted that mosquitoes were a huge problem to the expedition. They came across many Indian tribes, only two Indians were killed, and there was first and incident to cause attack. They even traded or bought supplies from many tribes, and a Shoshone girl, Sacagawea helped them with their expedition. She would help guide the expedition, cook, and set up and take down a Teepee everyday. Also with the indian tribes, they brought a Giardoni type air rifle, which could kill a deer. It shot .46 caliber balls with the energy of a modern .45 ACP ( Automatic Colt Pistol, like the hand guns used in World War one and two) bullet fired from a handgun. It had a flask that held enough air for 30 shots and the gun held 20 balls. It was reloaded by tilting it upwards. Although it p...
When people think of a pediatric nurse practitioner, they normally think of a person who performs examinations, takes blood samples, and measures vital signs of children who are sick. What they don’t see are the countless hours spent getting to know the patient, showing sympathy and understanding, and having to explain the diagnosis and treatment plans to the parents and sometimes to the child. According to my career cruising inventory, any job in the medical field would be right for me. However, after reading the descriptions, I concluded that a pediatric nurse practitioner was the best path. I will be attending nursing school to receive my nurse practitioner license, while specializing in pediatrics. The skills, educational requirements,
American history is accompanied by a long list of explorers who first discovered and who explored the massive continent. All of the explorers had an impact on the development of America. The Lewis and Clark expedition, also known as the Corps of Discovery, stands prominently at the top part of this list. The Lewis and Clark Expedition has had a significant political, social, and economic effect on America. They were the first to map out the west and set off westward expansion. Without the success of the expedition growth of America would have taken five times as long, as predicted by Thomas Jefferson.
After being issued by President Thomas Jefferson to map, explore, and compile information on the land just bought through the Louisiana Purchase, Captain Meriwether Lewis and 2nd Lieutenant William Clark set off on one of the greatest expeditions of all time. This paper will explore what adversities were faced on the Corp of Discoveries. From militant Indians to diseases like dysentery, they faced it all. And as Captain Lewis documented, “We went as close to hell as you can go in this lifetime.” (11.Perry)
In 1914, a great leader began a great expedition, unbeknownst to him that instead of being known as great explorers, they would be known as some of the greatest survivors. This man was Sir Ernest Shackelton and he was determined to be the first to cross the Antarctic. Little did he know, his biggest challenge would end up being his ability to lead his team to survival. He also had no idea that their tale of strength, determination, and courage to survive would influence people well into the 21st century, and the book detailing their stories would be used as a model of leadership. As our group read this book, it was evident that Shackleton was a truly motivated and successful leader as we have come to understand one to be. His ability to successfully lead a team played a significant role in their survival.
I am Joselynn Brown. I just completed the first semester of my third year at WSU Tri-Cities. I am ashamed to say that, for the first time in my life, I failed at school. I have not always been a straight A student, in fact, I have only gotten a 4.0 once in my life. However, failing has never been acceptable to me. So what happened this semester? I failed not only one, but two classes. Now, I am left fighting for my spot in a school that I got automatically accepted to for having good grades. Thus, it is time to dig deep and explain just what went wrong.
There are few jobs in today’s world that are essential to our society and being a nurse is one of them. Diane Marks Nurse Clinician of Pediatric Allergy at the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg Manitoba granted me the privilege of sitting down to discuss her career . Through this interview I was able to gain perspective on how being a pediatric nurse encompasses more than what is written in the job description. It is more than just needles and antibiotics, but many times it means being a mother, a sister, a friend, a councillor, and many other roles in the patient’s life.
Kids aren’t like adults, their bodies are growing and changing constantly and require specific knowledge to understand. I find it interesting learning about children’s mindsets and how their bodies are different from adults. I have always had a passion for working with kids and anytime that I have gotten an opportunity to be around kids and working with them I take it. I love being able to help kids feel better and to see them develop physically and mentally throughout time. Seeing a kids’ reaction to learning something new or feeling better is a highlight to my day which is why I chose to pursue my career in pediatrics as a pediatric nurse.
Exploration has always been a central theme in the development of the United States. The Louisiana Purchase, in 1803, made the government more eager to expand west. The newly acquired lands were in need of exploration. A team needed to be established to survey and document the new territory. The Lewis and Clark expedition would answer the unknown questions of the west. The expedition would not have been successful without the leadership, determination, discipline of the Corps of Discovery, and the cooperation of the Native Americans. President Jefferson wanted the leader to have the same passion and intensity toward the discovery of the west as he possessed. Jefferson hand- picked the leader of the team to be Meriwether Lewis. President Jefferson had high expectations for the mission to find an all water route to the Pacific. These expectations drove Jefferson and Lewis to coordinate a mission to assess the west.
Being accountable to me as a professional is saying yes to the call and responsibility we have to bear out. It is a responsibility we take for ourselves and for others who rely on us to be present in any situations. The mission requires an openness to relationship with others. The consistency of performing at a higher level each time the job is done and strive to give all for the greatest good. In collaboration with others involved. That bond can strengthen when everyone involved intersect their effort to the same purpose. The skills acquired over the years as a bedside nurses give me an opportunity to be dependable and trustworthy. Knowing what to do in difficult situations and being intuitive is a plus. It can help in a managerial position
It’s been my desire, longing for a nursing career since I was in my primary and secondary school. At the age of 12, I began to look after children and baby-sitting then, from there, I gained the understanding of how to deal with children. Nursing is one of the highly demanding careers that bring new challenges every day and it comes with various rewards and a real sense of job satisfaction. I chose nursing because it is a profession where you never really finish learning. It has been my dream job since my tender age. Seeing nurses visiting my school treating students, immunisation, teaching us about health and sexual health issues, this encouraged me. My goal and desire at that age have been to help people within the Health sector. That is how; I decided to go to college where I am currently doing my Access to Higher Education Diploma (Science), which involves Biology and Chemistry. I chose this pathway because I want to gain the relevant skills and knowledge of my career to be. As someone who wants to become a nurse, I found biology as an important role in the delivery of client car...
