The Godfather: Michael Vs. Sonny

At a first glance Michael and Sonny appear to be quite different. Upon
further observation, however, they have some similarities. Although they are
different in areas of personality, values, and their tempers, they are similar
in areas of loyalty, their respect for their father, and their strong family
ties.

Their personalities are quite different. Sonny is brash and arrogant,
where Michael is calm and cool. When Don Corleone was in the hospital and Sonny
is in charge, the family got kind of careless. He doesn't seem to care what
could happen due to his actions. He wants to kill the police captain and
doesn't think about the repercussions. Tom has to tell him that it wouldn't be
good to kill a cop, but they end up doing it anyway. I think Michael was pushed
into it because of his loyalty to the family. He is more calculating in manner.
Near the end when he “takes care of all the family business” on the day of the
Baptism is a prime example of this. Because he was this way, the objects of his
violence had no idea that it was coming.

Their values are another way that they differ. Michael is a man of
honor. He doesn't run around having affairs with different women. He only
marries twice because his first wife was killed in the explosion. Sonny is an
adulterer. He is with another women during his sisters wedding, along with a
few other times throughout t...

The Godfather by Mario Puzo Essay

- In a world little seen or heard of, the Godfather emerges as the universal symbol of organized crime for all of those who read or watch this tale. From killing Fanucci, a local extortionist, to becoming the most powerful Don in the United States, Vito Corleone’s rise to power is indeed spectacular. The book opens emphasizing the network of friends that Don Corleone has created, starting at the wedding where they have their meetings. After failed negotiations to save his godson Johnny’s movie career, the Don sends Luca Brasi to kill Jack Woltz’s prized $600,000 racehorse and place its head in his bed....   [tags: organized crime, Corleone, Don Vito]

Honour in The Godfather and Romeo & Juliet Essay

- How is honour the driving force with the texts The Godfather and Romeo & Juliet. The Godfather and Romeo & Juliet are complex texts which the readers of them barely see pass their superficial meanings. The Godfather on the surface is about the mafia underworld in the Italian American underworld, however underneath the facade it is also a fantastical tale of many types of honour. Romeo and Juliet is superficially a tale of two lovers whose families are torn apart by hatred for one another, but it too is a tale of honour....   [tags: essays research papers]

The Godfather: An American Dream Story Essay

- The Godfather: An American Dream Story The Godfather is the “dark-side of the American dream story” (Turan, pp2). The film follows the practices of a fictional Italian mafia family, the Corleone’s. Though most Americans do not condone the practices of the Italian mafia, they cannot deny that Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is a cinematic masterpiece. This film gave insight to a mysterious way of life that the average person does not have knowledge of. As the audience is educated about the mafia they also are introduced to many stereotypes....   [tags: Film Movies]

Analytical Critique of The Godfather Essay

- Analytical Critique of The Godfather      I believe the reason that, 'The Godfather', is such a great film is because it lets audiences decide whether they like the characters or not. Too many movies made about organized crime begin with some seemingly random act of violence. 'The Godfather', however, lets it be known from the start to judge the characters in the film based on what type of person they are instead of the criminal activities they may engage in.      The film begins with a wedding, and this setting sets the stage for the basic theme of the movie, which is family....   [tags: Movie Film Review Godfather Essays]

Consistently ranked as one of the top three films by the American Film institute, this gangster film sits among the likes of Citizen Kane (1941), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and the more recent Schindler’s List (1993) (American). When it was released, The Godfather was nominated for ten Academy Awards, and won three: Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
