The Health Risks of Smoking
According to Global Smoking Statistics, 80,000 and 100,000 youths start smoking everyday. Smoking is everywhere, in shops, restaurants and malls. Smoking can be controlled if the right steps are taken. If you walked around downtown Fort Collins, the odds are good that you will encounter a smoker. The negative effects of smoking outweigh the positive effects of smoking yet people still do it. There are ways to quit that can make your life better if you smoke.
Smoking goes back to 1492 when Christopher Columbus first stepped onto the plains of the new world. Native Americans chewed and inhaled a specific type of leaf, using a “toboca” pipe to inhale the foreign leaf. It soon became a treasure for the Europeans, after Christopher discovered this new creation. Cigarettes did not become popular until the 1880s, nor were they available. People just used pipes and cigars. When, according to Smoking, James B. Duke developed a way to mass produce cigarettes, making them cheaper and milder. This created an increase in popularity and between 1870 and 1890 the usage increased 100 times what is was before.
The health risks of smoking are that it causes Lung cancer and in 1992 there were 161,000 new cases of lung cancer and 143,000 deaths according to Tobacco and Smoking, 1998. The duration and amount smoked determines the risk of getting lung cancer. Men or women who smoke forty cigarettes a day, compared to those who smoke twenty a day, have twice the risk as getting lung cancer. Those who start smoking before 15 are four times more likely to get lung cancer than those who begin after twenty-five. It also causes Cardiovascular Disease. Smokers, male and female, are at a higher risk to get recurrent heart attacks, sudden death from coronary heart disease and myocardial infection than nonsmokers. The increase is two to four times the amount than nonsmokers. Cigarettes cause an addiction. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug. It is the nicotine that is in tobacco that makes cigarettes so addicting. A 1991 editorial in the Lancet, from the book Tobacco and Smoking on page 33 says:
The core of the problem lies in the addictiveness of nicotine. It is nicotine that people cannot easily do without, not tobacco; it is nicotine dependence that slows the progress of existing programmes. As a drug deliver system the modern cigarette is a highly e...

Smoking is everywhere and will continue to be all around us. We can ignore it or take action. One less person smoking means that there is that much less smoke in the air. With all the new smokers, a plan has to be set in place, either creating more ads or finding accurate facts. Unless smoking dissolves from the face of the earth, there will still be people “killing themselves.” Since smoking causes lung cancer, bad after effects and other problems, the need for elimination is even higher. If you smoke than you probably know it is hard to quit, but with the right resources and the motivation to quit, the United States will be a more “breathable” place to live.

There is only negative factors to it that positive. According to the California’s Tobacco control program’s article the 1# preventable cause of death, the use of cigarettes as the primary way of consuming tobacco did not become popular until the early 1900s. Cigarette smoking peaked in 1965 in the United States, when about 50 percent of men and 33 percent of women smoked. Smoking tobacco can result to lung cancer or other deadly diseases that kills more than murder by more than 200 and traffic accident for more than 50. According to the New York State smoker’s quitline, 169,400 Americans contract lung cancer every year. 156,700 (93%) will die because of the disease. Of those deaths, 135,630 (87%) were smokers. Smoking is really addictive. A smoker is someone who smokes regularly. Smoking regularly causes addiction, so almost all the smokers are addicted. An addict is someone who is addicted to a substance that they cannot control themselves because the brain changes that happens when consuming the drugs occur over time and starts to object the addicted person to the point when they lose self-control to resist taking
Every year cigarette smoking is responsible for 500,000 premature deaths (Nugel), you do not want to be just another statistic, do you? America’s first cash crop was tobacco. That means that tobacco has been around for a really long time. It was not until 1865, though, that cigarettes were sold commercially. They were sold to soldiers at the end of the Civil War (Dowshen). From then, cigarettes spread like wildfire, and it was not until 1964 that anyone made a stand about the negative effects of tobacco and cigarettes. People start smoking for all different reasons, some to fit in and some to “escape”. Regardless, it is a horrible habit. 3900 children will try their first cigarette today. Amongst adults who currently smoke, 68% of them began at age 18 or younger, and 85% at 21 or younger (American Lung Association). And of all those people, 70% say if they were given another chance they would never have picked up that first cigarette (Tobacco Free Maine). Smoking is responsible for 1 and 5 deaths in the united states, and is the number one preventable cause of death (NLH). Smoking burns and there is no doubt about that, but before one picks up that cigarette, understand the negative effects on not only oneself, but others affected by ones poor choices, like second-hand smoke. Because of smoking cigarettes, many types of cancer, decrease of life quality, and negative health effects have become all too common in the world today.
It has the power to bring many different people together for a common interest. Bob Marley used the power of music to basically change the world for the better; but imagine now his songs had negative messages supporting violence and war…. it would have had the same powerful effect but only in the opposite direction.Because of the Work Bob Marley has done, society has a responsibility to take advantage of the power of music and be able to change the world for the better. Music has the power to do what billions of past generations were trying to do: erase enemies, but instead of war, society will fight with music. Music helps when words mean nothing because it is the “universal language of all kind”; everyone understands it (henry Longfellow 1). As everyone sung in harmony, they begun to realize that they all had each other. If all this is deemed possible, music can be that superhero that we’ve all been waiting for, and possibly we will be able to save the world, one concert, one fan, and one song at a
Music is more than just an idea, it is a way of life. It is something that can create emotions in oneself that they did not know they even had. Music speaks about one’s life, their hardships and happiness, their sorrow and joy. Many types of music have done this for thousands of years, but I think that the genre that best describes life is reggae, with its soulful lyrics and laid-back island vibe it was a type of music that spoke right to your heart, and with reggae comes one name, Bob Marley. He wasn’t in it for the fame, he was in it for his absolute love for music. He was a man who spent his entire life preaching about peace over violence, he wanted to promote the idea of Rastafari, and the principle that all people were equal regardless
Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, worldwide, and most importantly, in New York. Although the tobacco industry appears to be a beneficial addition to our economy, it has been a socially acceptable business in the past because it brings jobs to our people and tax money to our government; but the cost of tobacco related treatment, mortality, disability, and pollution, the government winds up having to provide the funds to programs related to these issues. If current smoking patterns continue, by 2030 the proportion of tobacco related death will be one in six, about 10 million deaths per year (World bank). There are scientific articles regarding the relation of premature mortality and disability to tobacco use. Places where tobacco use is commonly used, about ninety percent of cases of lung cancer, fifteen percent of cases of other cancers, seventy-five percent of cases of bronchitis and emphysema and twenty-five

Now, the Bible seh so, Babylon newspaper seh so, and I and I the children seh so. Yunno? So, I don't see how much more reveal our people want. Wha' dem want? A white God, well God come black. True...
Smoking is harmful, expensive, and sad habit that many people face in their lifetime. The upside to this is that there are many programs that are offered to people at little or no money to quit this habit. The state of Florida sponsors a smoking cessation program that has had a high successful rate to discontinue the use of tobacco products. The school system also informs students of the harm of smoking at a young age so discourage youth from smoking. These products hurt the users and families on many different levels. That is why I feel that anyone who is considering smoking should think about all the negative things that can happen before they start this gross habit.

Smoking is a simple process of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning tobacco, but it has deadly consequences. According to the American Cancer Society, smoking is the most preventable cause of death in America today (Encarta, 2002). Until the 1940?s, smoking was considered harmless. It was at this time that epidemiologists noticed a dramatic increase in the cases of lung cancer. A study was then conducted between smokers and nonsmokers to determine if cigarettes were the cause of this increase. This study, conducted by the American Cancer Society, found increased mortality among smokers. Yet it was not until 1964 that the Surgeon General put out a report acknowledging the danger of cigarettes. The first action to curb smoking was the mandate of a warning on cigarette packages by the Federal Trade Commission (Encarta, 2002). In 1971, all cigarette advertising was banned from radio and television, and cities and states passed laws requiring nonsmoking sections in public places and workplaces (Encarta, 2002). Now in some cities smoking is being completely banned from public places and workplaces and various people are striving for more of these laws against smoking.
Cigarette smoking is a danger to our life and health. It is the leading known cause of lung cancer. Each year more than 30,000 people will die of lung cancer and 4 out of 5 of them will get it because of cigarette smoke.
