The Joy Luck Club is a compilation of 16 interwoven stories, broken into four sections. The four sections follow the traditional plot development arc; the stories within them also follow the arc. The first story in the book, “The Joy Luck Club,” is the exposition of the book and the story “A Pair of Tickets” is the resolution. Every story has a climax, but the book as an interwoven whole does not; for example the story “Best Quality.”
The exposition of the book is found in the “Joy Luck Club” story; “The Joy Luck Club” is the first story in the book and it sets up the rest of the plot for Jing-mei. Jing-mei is told the story of how her mother fled the Japanese invasion in China, and barely survived, “Pushing …toward Chungking, until…I had lost everything except three fancy silk dresses which I wore one on top of the other. She had two daughters at this time and had to leave them on the side of the road because she thought she was going to die.
