It is believed that Tecumseh was born in 1768 in central Ohio. He was the second son of a Shawnee warrior who was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant. In his dying breaths, his father commanded his eldest son Cheesuaka, to train Tecumseh as a warrior and to never make peace with the whites. Cheesuaka was good to his word and became an excellent warrior and a teacher. He grew close with his younger brother, and after their mother moved to Missouri he acted as a foster parent as well. Tecumseh was a model child, and although it is claimed that he ran in terror from his first battle, his courage never faltered from then on. Tall, muscular, intelligent, and highly charismatic, Tecumseh proved to be a master battle tactics and an excellent speaker. (Edmunds)
Prophet was one of a set of triplets born just a few years after Tecumseh. Tenskwatawa, as he was first known was the only one of the three believed to have survived into adulthood. Part of this could be because, unlike Tecumseh, Tenskwatawa was a clumsy child who was unskilled in hunting and would never become a warrior. This was a serious faux paux for a young man in Shawnee society. Tenskwatawa lost his right eye in a hunting accident when he was young. As he grew older, developed a taste for whiskey and quickly degenerated into severe alcoholism. Despite his flaws, Tenskwatawa was devoted to Tecumseh, and the older brother acted as his protector. (Edmunds)
Tenskwatawa’s life was filled with alcohol and despair when, he...
Tecumseh was the fifth child of his siblings. They were Chiksika, Tecumpease, Sauwauseekau, another daughter, Tecumseh, and triplets with only two surviving, Lalawethika and Kumskaukau. With his parents dead, when Tecumpease married Wasabogoa, they took care of the two surviving triplets and Tecumseh. He was favored by Tecumpease and taught how to be a Shawnee war...
Quanah Parker was born in 1845, the exact date of his birth is not known due to the times and the lack of recording dates like birthdays back then. Also the exact place of his birth is unknown, it is thought to be somewhere along the Texas-Oklahoma border, but there are conflicting reports. Quanah himself said that he was born on Elk Creek south of the Wichita Mountains, but a marker by Cedar Lake in Gaines County, Texas says otherwise. There are still other places where he was supposedly born like Wichita Falls, Texas. “Though the date of his birth is recorded variously at 1845 and 1852, there is no mystery regarding his parentage. His mother was the celebrated captive of a Comanche raid on Parker's Fort (1836) and convert to the Indian way of life. His father
History has not been kind to Tenskwatawa, otherwise known as Lalawethika or The Prophet. He is inevitably compared to his heroic brother Tecumseh and fails to measure up in both physical and moral stature. He seems hidden in the shade of his brother's name, whereas his brother would never have had the stature he received if it were not for The Prophet's religion of classical Indian heritage. Lalawethika seemed to be plentiful of both physical and social shortcomings. An unimpressive-looking man of below-average height, fond of wearing jewelry, especially small medals, which he hung from his pierced nose and ears. His most striking physical characteristic was his damaged right eye, which was permanently closed after he injured it with a bow and arrow. Lalawethika was not a likable person. He was not accepted by the other Shawnee youths and refused to take part in traditionally prestigious male activities such as hunting and fighting. As a young man he boasted of his abilities but seemed to lack anyambition. He attempted to compensate for his misfortunes but was only counterproductive in making "a truculent, bragging personality that earned him his nickname Lalawethika (The Rattle or Noisemaker)" (p. 73). Two activities Lalawethika liked were drinking and talking. He wasn't as gifted a speaker as his brother Tecumseh, but he was nonetheless manipulative and forceful. Using these qualities he became a medicine man in Tecumseh's village. Lalawethika's transformation from a lazy drunkard into a powerful spiritual leader came after a dream in which he claimed to have been visited by the Great Spirit.
Born in 1804, Cochise would rise to be an influential leader, as well as, one of the fiercest advisories to American westward expansion. As an Apache Indian chief, Cochise had led his tribe in fighting off foreign invaders, both American and Mexican. “Cochise was known to his people as A-da-tli-chi, meaning hardwood” (Notable) After Spaniard reign over their territory was finished, the Apache
A most interesting film detailing the history and role of the prophet in the Jewish tradition. The first question we must explore is what a prophet is. A prophet by definition is a person who speaks by divine inspiration. Others will say that a prophet is one whose eye is open. A person who can see things that others cannot. In order to understand the prophets and their appearance in history we must first understand the politics of the times.
His legend does not have an exact starting point, though scholars know he was born sometime in the late 1820’s. He was the descendant of a respected family, his grandfather Mahko, the chief of their tribe before his dad, Talkishim, or “the Gray One.” He was born into the Chiricahua tribe, one of many Apache bands in the area. His original Apache name was Goyahkla which means “one who yawns.” His birthplace is thought to be somewhere near present day Clifton Arizona, though no one really knows for sure; Geronimo called it “No-dayohn Canyon.” He says he had three brothers and four sisters, but he most likely only had one blood-related sibling, his sister Nahdoste. Their language had only one word for both sibling and cousin, so distinguishing between them was next to impossible. (Stout 1-10)
Blodget, Brian. “Tecumseh: His Role in the Cause and Conduct of the War of 1812”. The History Ring. 2 Jan. 2005.
According to the article, “Tecumseh sided with the British in the War of 1812 (1812–15) in an attempt to halt the expansion of U.S. settlements into the Old Northwest and the dispersal of the native peoples living there.” This means that Tecumseh was so against the westward expansion that he fought alongside the British in the War of 1812 to stop the westward expansion, and spread the amount of Native Americans living there. Tecumseh did everything he possibly could to stop the westward expansion from
Sequoyah was born around 1776 in Tuskegee, Tennessee. His English name was George Guess. From the beginning, his life was a little outrageous. He lived with his mother in a home that spoke only Cherokee. His name is said to be a form of the Cherokee word for hog. This Cherokee word is Sikwa. This may be a reference to the limp and cane that we see in the pictures of Sequoyah. Family links are very important to the Native people. His mother’s side of the family was considered a strong line and he was proud of them. Wut-teh, Sequoyah’s mother, had a sibling, John Watts or Young Tassel, and they were the niece of Old Tassel and Doublehead. Sequoyah’s father was a German Immigrant a peddler, was named George as well. His father was not around during h...
Tecumseh was the chef of the Shawnee tribe, one of the tribes taking a stand against congress. However, when he left his tribe for a period of time in 1810, many members of his tribe, without his authorization
Two men are walking to temple. The older man says to the younger man, “So, do you know why the Jewish people aren’t voting for President Bush?” The younger man replies with an inquisitive “No.” “Well,” says the older man, “the last time the Jewish people followed a Bush they wound up wandering in the Desert.”
Methoataaskee gave birth to Tecumseh in 1768 in the Shawnee settlement on the Ohio River, they named him Tecumethe meaning “shooting star” or “blazing comet”. The English people called him Tecumseh. Tecumseh’s father was Pukeshinwau, he belonged to the Kispoko division of the tribe (they were leaders in war) and a member of the panther clan. His mother, Methoataaskee belonged to the Pekowi division who were people responsible for for keeping traditions. She was a member of the turtle clan and in the settlement where Tecumseh was born the women had to build houses made from bark fastened around wooden posts. They also made clothes, worked on the fields, and cooked most of the food. The men had to hunt the food for the tribe and had to be trained to become warriors to protect the Shawnee settlement. The children
After Tekakwitha’s parents passed away, her two aunts and more notably, her uncle, who is believed by some to be chief of the Turtle clan, took her in. Since there aren’t many records of her life at this point, there are only educated guesses of what her childhood into her mid-teen years held in store for Tekakwitha.
According to the book of Matthew, “Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king,” indicating he was born between 6 and 4 BCE (Matthew 2:1). The Bible refers to this as the virgin birth because Joseph and Mary never conceived him. He was a human being in which God took his form. Very little is known about his childhood and the Bible only reveals a picture of Jesus and his teachings when he was approximately 30 years of age. Whatever happened to Jesus during these years is a mystery to us all, but whatever happened transformed him into the divine being which he is today.
Zephaniah neither performs miracles nor claims that his prayers may influence or even change the expected course of events, he does not perform any symbolic acts, and is not related to the Temple. Instead, he is a speaker who delivered a sophisticated speech concerning the future and called for repentance (Zvi). Relatively little is known about the prophet Zephaniah, whose name in Hebrew, Tsephan-Yah' means, "Jehovah has concealed (Freedman). In contrast with other prophets, however, Zephaniah provided his genealogy to the fourth generation, back to Hezekiah. (Zephaniah:1:1, Jeremiah: 1:1, Ezekiel:1:3) Most commentators agree that his great-great grandfather was King Hezekiah. Therefore, Zephaniah was of royal descent and this would have added to his harsh condemnation of the princes of Judah and have shown that he was a courageous prophet of Yahweh. (Zvi)
