“After the game was finished, Mr. Oakhurst drew the youthful speculator behind the door and thus addressed him: “Tommy, you’re a good little man, but you can’t gamble worth a cent. Don’t try it over again.” He then handed him his money back, pushed him gently from the room,” (Harte, 3) He listened to others if he wanted to, but when it went against his own judgment, he decided not to. The Innocent wanted to search for his fortune, and “There was a remembrance of this in his boyish and enthusiastic greeting of Mr. Oakhurst. He had started, he said, to go to Poker Flat to seek his fortune.” (Harte, 3) Piney was his fortune. By seeking, he meant running away with her so they could be together. He did not go on his own. “Alone?” No, not exactly alone; in fact (a giggle), he had run away with Piney Woods.” (Harte, 3) He and Piney had eloped and gone to Poker Flat to be

I once heard a rabbi compare life to a game of poker. That certainly captivated my attention, because who would ever imagine a religious figure draw a connection between life and gambling? When we are born, G-d deals us a hand of cards, with each one determining aspects of our being, such as what kind of family we are born into, where we live, what our talents are, and what exactly we are meant to struggle with. We cannot trade our hand for anyone else’s, so we have to play the best game we can with what we are dealt. In a sense, one can say that Adam and Chava had a full deck of cards, as they were perfect beings. They epitomized every trait known to mankind on a balanced spectrum, and thus they are passed down to us. As the generations go by and more neshamos are brought down to Earth, we can’t have everyone with the same hand of cards, and so Hashem mixes things up, and we become dependent on each other to play a good game. In the modern deck of cards, we have suits, which feature the same numbers and face cards, but under different banners. While their values might be the same, they still retain different meanings because of the flag they fly. In much the same way, two people might share the same or similar characteristics, but the way in which they channel them will be individual to that person, and they so each stand as individuals among the masses.

I thought to myself how reliable could a drunk person’s directions be anyway. To my surprise that man with the big spectacles was right and I walked in to room that had everything for an avid gambler. The walls were lined with slot machines and in the middle were Roulette, Poker, Blackjack, and Craps tables. I noticed that the New York City Police Commissioner was playing Poker. So I decided to test my luck and take a seat at the same table. I was dealt pocket aces and the Commissioner proceeded to bet a huge gambit of $5,000. The flop came and the 3 cards were 3 of hearts, 9 of diamonds, and 2 of clubs. A horrible flop and everyone checked, which was a sure sign that the Commissioner was bluffing. The next card to turn over was a 3 of diamonds, which gave me a full house. Before I could even move the Commissioner placed a bet of $10,000. I called him and raised his bet to $15,000. I knew he was bluffing so he was either stupid to call me or he actually had a good hand. The Commissioner did call me and to his demise the final card was turned over. The card was the 7 of clubs which only gave the Commissioner a pair of 3s that were on the board. When I turned my two cards over the Commissioner
Gambling... Who does not like to gamble? People play lotteries, bet on sport games or try their luck on slot machines with a thought to win some amount of money. In fact, this excitement for gambling can be seen even from early ages; for example, ancient Egyptians used to play dice in 2000 BC or the first casinos opened their doors to customers during the Greeco-Roman period ( Whittaker and Cushman 1 ). Nowadays casino industry is a large business in the United States that brings high revenues and offers various entertainment that attracts people from different areas. So just recently residents and visitors of Worcester, Wicomico and surrounding counties got a great opportunity to try themselves in a new Ocean Downs casino that came into operation couple months ago. Ocean Downs casino is an excellent benefit to the community that helps to improve the economic and social status of the county and also serves as a great entertainment for the adult population.
Many authors use mood shifts in their stories to leave a greater impact on the reader and make it easier to understand. The particular state of mind or feelings of a person is one’s mood. Various aspects of one’s surroundings can alter a mood. A story often creates a specific mood or even causes a number of different moods to arise in a short period of time. Shirley Jackson’s short story, "The Lottery" does just that, by forcing different moods to surface in various sections of the story. The peaceful mood at the story’s beginning, the anxiety that gradually builds, and the eventual horror at the story’s conclusion demonstrate mood shifts in this story.
Legal gambling seduces desperate local economies and profits from the very citizens who are least able to afford it. An alarming number of lottery sales rely on a small number of less-educated, low-income individuals from poor neighborhoods. Money reserved for education from these lotteries primarily fund scholarships, scholarships that are acquired mostly by middle class students. As a result, low income families are aiding in the progression of middle class families’ education, but little to none of these funds are aiding in advanced education of those on or below the poverty line. Despite states stating that revenues from lotteries are a crucial part of financial support for their states and community, none could prove that program funding would not be available if lotteries did not exist. In reality, most of these states experienced a decrease in general funding for programs lottery was created to improve. Although Native Americans boast that the establishment of a casino helped many tribes to overcome severe levels of poverty by creating jobs, Native American reservation populations still remain at about 50 percent unemployment. Among other casino types, such as destination resorts and smaller commercial casinos, those employed by indian casinos take in the lowest average pay, are not unionized, maintain low job security, and experience a lack of federal employee protection laws being followed. Convenience gambling, such as stand-alone machines located in easily accessible public locations, creates a minuscule amount of jobs and generates no local economic growth. These alluring rapid paced video gambling machines are readily available and exploit compulsive behaviors of local citizens to obtain as much money it can i...
At this point the adrenaline rush that is going through his body is one like no other. It is a mixture of excitement, nervousness, and competitiveness. It is a feeling players love to hate. They hate having it, but they love wanting it. As all these scenes pass before Manny’s eyes, he suddenly gets an urge to be bold and risky. He decides that calling his opponent would just weaken his position. “It would only make him think that I have a losing hand and am hoping for the best”, he reasons, “I’m all in” he then says, and slaps the cards down on the table in a Chan-like manner. Now it is up to Alex, it is his turn to decide whether to fold or call. Alex, though, is sure he has Manny beat, he gives Manny a smirk and says, in a Russian accent imitating the KGB guy from the movie Rounders, “I call.” All of sudden everyone is interested. One of these guys is about to lose all his chips. “Flip ‘em” somebody yells. As Manny flips his cards the whole table gets a look at them, A-K, an enviable hand. Alex flips his: 10-10, also a good hand. Alex definitely has an advantage, with a pocket pair. Both players look at each other and then back down at the table. Manny is hoping his bold move doesn’t backfire on him, and Alex just wants to finish the hand without having a heart attack. Here come the next three cards, also known as the flop, 7-9-K. Manny sighs as he sees his King, he is now in the lead.

Gambling addiction is an issue found in numerous areas where gambling is legal. People who are addicted to gambling, also know as problem gamblers, face many health risks including depression, suicidal thoughts, loss of sleep, loss of appetite, migraine and anxiety in addition to marriage breakdown, problems at work and bankruptcy (9). About 2 percent of adults are thought to be problem gamblers (1). In today’s society this costly addiction is not often considered to be a common problem among those who gamble. Only a small amount of states in the U.S. give enough attention toward this rising problem of people that are sometimes even willing to commit crimes just to aid their addiction. In the past our government has sought out a few solutions that help those who have developed an addiction and prevent a further increase in the number of people becoming addicted. Personally, my outlook on the problem is that it needs a better solution. I think that a higher funding to gambling addiction clinics, more ordinance and restriction laws, and more prevention and awareness programs should bee brought into consideration in order to lower the amount of people who become addict to gambling.
