Argument
I believe professional athletes are overpaid. These athletes are making millions of dollars to have fun and play. They are getting paid to do what elementary kids do every day. Professional athletes are should be paid about sixty to ninety thousand a year. The reason I say this much is because they are at a professional level and have worked hard to get to that status. In theory, professional athletes are overpaid because the U.S. is more focused on entertainment value in today’s society, rather than important issues like employment or cancer. First, the commissioner for all the sports should lower all of the salary caps for the players. Next, all of the athletes should be placed on a merit system. Meaning if the athlete is making 12 million dollars and there performance or statistics (such as shooting percentage, rebounding, or rushing yards), decrease by 20% or more, that athlete should have a pay cut. Also, when the athlete performs and does what he or she was employed to do, the athlete should be considered for a raise. Then, once this has been accomplished, the athlete will have worked for his paycheck and appreciate the hard work and dedication that he or she has committed. One summer in July in the city of Copperas Cove, Texas, I was just getting off of my $5.65 an hour job at Blockbuster Video. I sat down to watch television with my niece. I got the remote and turned the TV to ESPN. I watched 18-year old Lebron James accepts a 90 million dollar contract fr...

Should College Athletes Be Paid? Essay

- ... As long as they are not breaking any state or national laws, then I do not see the harm of any individual trying to make some extra cash. I think it is unethical and unfair for the National Collegiate Athletic Association to punish athletes for trying to add a few dollars to their bank accounts. As for myself being a college football player, I know what it is like to struggle with income in college and not having money to pay for certain/basic needs of the college life. Stating this, being a football player and attending school enrolled as a full time student as well, we are basically putting forty-plus hours of work every week....   [tags: money, income, change, paid]

- College athletics are becoming more and more like the professional leagues except for one big issue, money. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) makes billions every year off these student athletes. March Madness is one of the biggest money makers for the NCAA, in 2010 the NCAA signed a 14 year deal worth almost $11 billion with CBS and Turner Sports that would give them the rights to shows the games (USA Today, 2010). Should College Athletes Be Paid? Essay

- College athletes generate millions of dollars for their schools each year, yet they are not allowed to be compensated beyond a scholarship due to being considered amateurs. College football and basketball are multi-billion dollar businesses. Essay on Should Athletes Be Paid?

- Should Athletes Be Paid At some colleges their athletes are a key source of income for the university. This would lead one to believe that the athletes who produce money should get a portion of that money in return. Despite the fact that paying college athletes is banned some of them still get paid anyway. The overall good to be gained from paying the college athletes could be that they would want to stay in school longer and develop an education rather than going to the pros prematurely. One would think that knowing all of this the athletes should at least get paid a small amount of the money they bring to the school....   [tags: College Athletes, Key Source Income, University]
